ILAY, an 18-year-old sound artist behind the alias ILAYRUNI (@ilayruni), works at the crossroads of electronic music and percussive instruments. Merging these two worlds, he explores the possibility of rhythm and sound. Growing up in a family that had a strong bond with the electronic music scene, ILAY had access to a wide range of styles and sounds, giving him the chance to wander and discover all types of frequencies and feelings. Traveling through a wide range of styles during his sets and productions, he seeks highly percussive rhythmic patterns that merge with synthesizers and give place to deep soundscapes.

Elobbaby (@elena-callegari-889359029) , multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Venice, brings experimentation into his research across the various genres of electronic music, mostly taking inspiration from the electronic music of the 90s, merging with the organic and multi-genre sounds of the current generation and various rhythms more hypnotic, deep, atmospheric and emotional sounds.

At just 18 years old, Ilay is shaping his own unique sound, blending electronic music with percussive rhythms in a way that feels deep, natural and immersive. Growing up in a family strongly connected to electronic music, he was exposed to a wide range of styles, giving him the freedom to explore and develop his own musical style.

His sets flow effortlessly between genres, bringing hypnotic percussion, deep synth textures, and evolving soundscapes together into something truly special. This live set is a perfect example of that – full of energy, depth, and emotion.

Podcast 064 - ILAYRUNI [live]

This week we land in Valencia and spend a moment with Ilayruni, a 19-year-old with an ear for rhythm and space, still shaping his sound but already showing a feel for nuance. Earlier this year, he released Mountain Flyers EP on Sungate, a label with which we’ve worked closely over the years, known for its focus on various shades of techno and a taste for forward-thinking sounds.

His hour-long set is made entirely from his own material, and it leans into the shadows. It starts slow and murky, with a dense, eerie atmosphere that unfolds with intent. The progression is subtle but steady, each track steps a little deeper into the fog, each rhythm adds a sharper edge. There’s tension in the way it builds, but no drama.

There’s a clear affection for polyrhythms and off-center grooves, and a careful balance between control and drift. The textures shift, the pace grows, but the mood stays intact, claustrophobic at times, even hypnotic. It’s not polished to perfection, and that’s part of the charm. You hear someone exploring, reaching, figuring it out in real time. A young producer following instinct, not trends. We’re curious where that path leads.

»decadent yet depraved«, the debut album by belief defect, finds shelter and complicity in raster as home and label.

familiar with the underground music scene and how its skeptical nature can also be an obstacle to overcome, belief defect abandon any claim or credit in an attempt to transcend the limits authorship imposes, avoid the boundaries or expectations earned or self imposed and find the clearest, most direct path to their music for themselves and the listener.

at the core of the album is the music that inspired them, the conclusion of countless recordings listened to in their formative years that ultimately result in a life-long devotion to electronic music: from dance floor to primal anger and self-annihilating noise, to transcendental, ambient escapism and intense self-reflexive sonic layering.

the result is a soundtrack for this apocalyptic time, an uncompromising reflection on the state of mankind and its uncertain future — underscored by a sense of religious and secular demise referenced in track titles, samples, and soundscapes scattered throughout the album.

yet, more than a political statement »decadent yet depraved« is an introspective journey, turning each listener into a spiritual soul-seeker staring into the abyss, reaching for some kind of cathartic truthfulness.
