17. Call sign for 108 FM, Radio de la Resistance. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.  September 2015.  [In September of 2015 there was an attempted coup d’état in Burkina Faso. For two weeks the entire city of Ouagadougou was locked down.  All stores, ministries, offices, banks were closed.  The coup plotters took over the radio and television and shut down a lot of commercial stations.  A few days after the coup, however, a pirate radio station took to the air, ‘La Radio de la Resistance’.  The station was broadcasting using a mobile transmitter calling on all Burkinabé to resist, to fight the plotters.  The station would broadcast communiqués and revolutionary songs and a casio keyboard interpretation of the national anthem.  The signal was horrible but I loved their call sign.

Excerpts from Roulette concerts by improvising activist guitarist Derek Bailey, with commentary by musician/professor/author David Grubbs (Records Ruin The Landscape). Emerging from the London free improv scene, between 1986-99 Bailey tapped New York musicians to engage in his wildly diverse Company Weeks, in groupings and pairings with John Zorn (sax), Carlos Zingaro (violin), Ikue Mori (electronic percussion), Jim Staley (trombone), Ciro Baptiste (percussion), Jamaladeen Tacuma (bass), Calvin Weston (drums), Susie Ibarra (percussion), Richard Teitelbaum (electronics), and Greg Bendian (percussion). John Zorn is honoring Derek Bailey with three Nights of Improvisation at Roulette, Jan. 19-21, 2023.

David Grubbs: On Derek Bailey

Adrianne Munden-Dixon and Leo Chang’s “Some Time” presents stuttering physical exchanges between Munden-Dixon’s violin and electronics and Chang’s amplified piri. These pieces are tense and tightly-woven, yet constantly unraveling and reforming. Chang’s “ampiri” is a Korean double reed instrument running through electronics and played in unconventional and non-traditional ways. Recontextualising the instrument “quasi-autodidactically” aligns with Chang’s approach to free improvisation and his artistic practice, as it forms a dynamic relationship with more established tradition and lineage. Munden-Dixon has seasoned experience in the new music, contemporary ensemble, and orchestral worlds, with more recent forays into free improvisation using her violin in conjunction with electronics. Our first exposure to Munden-Dixon’s work was oddly via a genuinely bizarre Youtube video of an improvisation involving prerecorded and manipulated Irish music, metallic objects, sinuous violin playing, recorded sounds of gulping water, and coffee mug rattling. Munden-Dixon’s and Chang’s unrelenting diversity and adherence to honest and unpretentious playing is evident throughout “Some Time”.

"Subterranean Sky" - a 2002 collaboration between sculptor george deMerle and composer Scott Gibbons - is a spacial environment that defies everyday perceptions of mass, form and time. An incredibly strong yet lightweight plastic, originally developed by deMerle using materials from NASA, is the medium used to create delicate fabrics of a proposed alternate reality.

The first to propose putting art into space*, deMerle sculpts light out of darkness with this webbing to create environments which seem to defy gravity. In fact, a recent deMerle piece which was so large as to fill an aircraft hangar weighed only 1 lb total, suspended. deMerle is best known as a political activist who fights for civil liberties, and for many decades he was considered an Outsider artist. But his art is a natural extension of his politics, which celebrates the necessity of personal expression for self-actualization.

Gibbons' original audio score is incorporated directly into the piece, directed through speakers that are integrated into deMerle's ethereal sculpture.

Although this is their first collaboration, deMerle and Gibbons have been close friends since the mid-80's, and in many ways Gibbons' work with audio is the sonic equivalent of deMerle's webbed designs; both of which often suggest more than they reveal.

* Although the NEA was very excited to back this project in 1977, they were ultimately unable to do so as there was no category for this kind of proposal.
