I'm Kelsey Knotts currently residing in Pilsen, Chicago.

How do you hydrate in the club?

With Topo Chico and lime! It's kind of a Chicago thing thats stuck with me. If i'm somewhere else in the world, any type of carbonated water is chill.

Advice for beginning Dj's?

My advice for Dj's starting out is to find out what works best for you, don't let someone tell you that there is a definite right or wrong way to DJ. For technical aspects try counting the 4 to the floors listen for the claps and kicks. If you can't find a pair of CDJ's or Technics any kind of music software is TOTALLY CHILL. Make due with what you have don't let some jerk tell you other wise because gear is expensive!~ Oh and practice makes perfect fall down and get back up again, messing up train wrecking is totally chill just push the track back into place, most of the time people don't even notice a small blip even the greatest Dj's of all time mess up!

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance community?

I wish to see my friends thrive and in general would love to see more support within groups in America towards underground dance music because It's really hard in the DIY community to put a rave/show on anywhere in the states. It costs a lot of time and money. I have high hopes that communities will all continue to be diverse with line ups as well.

Favorite gig so far?

Probs a tie between:
-playing on a roof in DTLA this summer with Beautiful Swimmers (shoutout DC crew!) and hitting the b2b with my boy Benedek to close out the evening was divine!
-Traveling to Vancouver to play in June for my first international DJ gig was so much fun. I bought all the records I used in this mix during my trip there!

Current DJ gear set up?

Two Technics 1200’s, Shure M44 7 cartridges (damn i need to buy some up soon), Pioneer DJM 600 mixer, Sony MDR headphones, Zoom h4n recorder, vinyl duster, IKEA shelf full of records raised up on IKEA Capita legs (an essential hack! having the decks six inches higher is perfect & it looks nice too!), monitors, various audio and power cables, floor, roof, walls windows, self

Advice to beginning djs?

trust your ear for what you like. ask questions. practice by yourself but also practice with friends. everybody’s different so when you practice djing with others it keeps you fresh! back to back djing with friends is how i really learned to have fun with mixing. also just hanging out with friends and playing music for/with each other is just one of life’s biggest joys in my opinion! get comfortable with your home DJ setup but also if you have a network of other DJ friends play on their setups because you never know what kind of gear your first DIY party might have.

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance community?

communication. love. don’t assume. don’t judge. be nice! help each other out! empathy and awareness.

Introduce yourself :} Where do you live currently? Hometown? One fun fact about yourself?

Hi. Im DJ Angel de la Guardia and some of you reading this may be familiar with my project Person of Interest. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, grew up in South Florida, went to school in San Francisco and now reside in Queens, New York  - aka the greatest city in the world! :)

Fun fact, in my 19th year, against the advice of my friends and family, I hopped freight trains across the USA. If you spend enough time with your self on a big old train, the sounds and rhythms of the tracks will treat you to the sickest techno.

Current gear set up?

I've been producing on mostly is Elektron Octatrack, Access Virus the red one, and Korg Wavestation. Lots of other little bits come in and out but mostly those Id say. This mix was recorded from 2 1200s and a numark 2-channel mixer.

Describe one of your first dj gigs in depth?

One of my first gigs was a live set for Industry of Machines night at Bossanova like 2013 or 2014 or so with Vereker and Florian Kupfer. I think the back patio was still a thing  and we went to Tina's diner on LSD after. Fun night. Oli was mixing dance mania to regis and ur then and i just remember whole thing being so raw and fun :)

Certainly, my name is Iggy, I’ll be clocking 32 years of age in a few months.  Born and Bred in Kansas (physically) & Puerto Rico (spiritually), raised in Florida, and re-residing in Kansas City, MO at the moment.

Do your own thing, play what you love, learn about what you love, be kind to everyone who works with you, be humble, tip well, don’t order the special (it’s mostly leftovers).

Lately ive been even more in love with Detroit and all the artists that live here.... Could write a book on it! But elsewhere I love everything Mdo/Sample Park/Terry Radio/West Mineral/Kansas people are doing - love the sound the aesthetic and the energy.  Seems like cool stuff is going on in Toronto, Montreal, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. Also love the Base Camp Beta podcasts - hearing a lot of great people discuss the contemporary scene/industry/landscape.

Singing & dancing to my parents Was Not Was/Sade/Steely Dan records with one of those big bright plastic kiddie microphones.

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.
