Hell Canto

On 7.10.23, Palestinian forces, led by Hamas, broke down the fence separating the Gaza enclave from Israel and unleashed a savage day of slaughter and kidnapping that ended with 1,195 dead on the Israeli side and 251 taken as hostages. The Israeli response was just as savage but much longer lasting and much, much more devastating. It resulted (at the time of writing) in around 72,000 deaths (70,000 - most likely, many more - Palestinians, largely non combatants, and 2,000 Israelis, largely soldiers) in Gaza, as well as at least 170,000 Palestinians injured, compounded by a genocidal policy of starvation and destruction of civil order. A response that has destroyed most of Gaza and accelerated the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank - where there have been around 1,000 Palestinian deaths caused by Israeli settlers and the IDF since October ’23. There have also been many deaths and injured in Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Yemen.

The horrors of the Unholy Land felt near at home, and like the invasion of Ukraine, pushed me to give some kind of personal response - however pointless and inadequate - beyond following and sharing news and commentaries. Already far into Luna rising, a text and electronica album about Ukraine and Russia, I didn't feel capable of responding with texts so I embarked on a wordless album called Hell Canto.

The parameters are the same for each of the Hell Canto pieces. I’d call the methodology a way of comprovisation, of making sound poetry, derived from vocal improvisations and electronic manipulations. In November '25, having recorded 50 pieces, decided to stop adding more - also the fragile and unlikely October '25 ceasefire remains in place though in practice the word ‘ceasefire’ is a bad joke, with no sign of real peace and humanitarian and political solutions on the horizon. I’ve listened through the 50 pieces and chosen 27 that I’d like to be included in the album and 23 which are orphans for the time being at least. The 27 pieces come to a total of 80 minutes which might be too long for a CD. It’s not sure yet. Anyway, for now there are 2 Soundcloud playlists - the 27 in the draft order for the album, and the 23 which for now are in order of recording.

With this new EP we want to involve the listener in a journey into the mysteries of ancient Egypt. The civilization of ancient Egypt was developed along the Nile Valley from the floodgates, to the south and to the border with the present Sudan, to the mouth, to the delta, to the Mediterranean Sea, for a total area of ​​about 1000 km. Although the territory was much larger, including much of the Libyan-Nubian Desert, human settlements, since the earliest times, developed only in the narrow green belt close to the banks of the wide river, in some places even only a few hundred meters. These lands are rich in charm and mystery and with our music we want to retrace them mentally, without real borders.

이 새로운 EP 를 통해, 우리는 청자들이 고대 이집트로의 신비로운 여정에 참여하기를 바란다. 고대 이집트의 문명은 나일 계곡을 따라 수문으로부터 남쪽으로, 그리고 현재 수단과의 국경, 삼각주, 지중해까지 발전하며 총면적이 1000km 에 달했다. 비록 리비아-누비아 사막의 대부분을 포함한 영토는 훨씬 더 넓었지만, 인간의 정착지는 초기부터 넓은 강둑과 가까운 좁은 그린벨트에서만, 어떤 곳에서는 불과 몇백 미터밖에 발달하지 못했다. 이 땅들은 매력과 신비로움으로 가득 차있으며, 우리의 음악으로 그들을 정신적으로, 물리적 국경없이 되짚어보고 싶다.

The Alchemical Theory (Bari, Italy)
The Alchemical Theory project was born from the creative union of three producers very different from each other but at the same time very similar. The identity of the project has been very influenced by the favorite sounds of the three artists, ranging from modular electronic sounds to much more atmospheric sounds. This project also comes from the love of mysticism, alchemy and nature. In each release they want to represent something that affects the listener's mind, reproducing a real mental journey.

The Alchemical Theory 프로젝트는 서로 다르지만 동시에 유사성을 보이는 3명의 프로듀서의 창조적인 합작에서 탄생했다.
이 프로젝트의 정체성은 그들 3명의 아티스트가 선호하는 모듈러 전자음악에서부터 더 많은 음향적, 대기적 사운드에 영향받았으며, 신비주의적, 연금술과 자연에 영감받았다.

The Tale:

The now silent road leading to the way home is indistinguishable from the surrounding landscape.
Thunder in the dark, a whisper of wind and suddenly you come across a gigantic organism of sin and darkness. 
Keep walking, deeper, until you are at the foot of a real underground. 
You pass many rooms and landscapes, everyone seems to go on forever carrying something. 
A disturbing wooden door blocks your path.

Splashes of dried blood are everywhere, somehow unaffected by the weather. 

You walk over to inspect it and suddenly the door opens slowly on its own. 
Four burning eyes stare at you with deafening violence and another howl hits your left eardrum in an annoying way. 
You try to stay still while the desire to escape runs through your veins.

In the age of neoliberal capitalism when every aspect of our existence needs to have a rational function, purpose and value, music starts to be seen as a tool or mere application for our everyday routines. There is music for better working efficiency, music to calm you down after the exhausting job, music to take drugs and dance to, music for meditation and so-called spiritual growth etc.

“Optimism” is an attempt to confront that paradigm and liberate the music from the dictatorship of current consumption models and strict functionality. This is reached by adopting and deconstructing the elements of modern electronic music and focusing on what lies beneath them: sparse polymetric beats instead of dance grooves, textures instead of timbres, mutating and morphing loops instead of melodic lines, rhizomatic structures instead of linear compositions.

The result is an emotionally diverse musical journey that constantly shifts away from listener’s expectations while still striving to grab the attention. Free for interpretations, “Optimism” raises the question if there is a chance to escape the utilitarianism these days?
