An oral/aural exploration of the creative work, materiality, practice, and history of the four individuals who compose the collective Sacred Realism. Although their work as individuals is rather varied and unique, there is something similar (or not?) at the core as to why they each chose to become musicians. Through a threaded conversation and collective listening they (we) will try to understand further what the core of the collective is by each asking the other some questions about it and the work we do.

Sacred Realism is an independent music collective producing scores, recordings, and concerts. It formed through the friendship and mutual respect of Andrew Lafkas, Bryan Eubanks, and Catherine Lamb in 2011 in New York City following the desire to support each others work and initiate something self sustaining. Rebecca Lane joined later in 2017 in Berlin after the three others had eventually migrated there.

Q-O2 is a Brussels based workspace for experimental contemporary music and sound art. Q-O2 develops projects in collaboration with national and international artists and arts organizations, hosts artists in-residence, and holds performances and concerts.

Gerard Lebik is a composer/improviser, saxophonist, sound artist, and curator active in experimental music and sound art—founder of the Sanatorium of Sound Festival and the Sokołowsko Music Lab. Lebik explores heterogeneous sound sources and music genres such as electro-acoustic composition/improvisation, live electronics, and noise, focusing on themes like the perception and propagation of sound waves, time disorder, psychoacoustics, and sound’s relationship with architecture and urban contexts. His outputs—performances, installations, and sound interventions—are based on sine waves, white noise, feedback, ambisonics, and multi-channel sound. He graduated from the Academy of Music in Wrocław.

Lebik has performed at festivals and venues, including TPAM (Yokohama, JP), Rewire (The Hague, NL), CTM (Berlin, DE), Fiber Festival (Amsterdam, NL), TodaysArt Festival (The Hague, NL), MONOM (Berlin, DE), Biennale (Zagreb, HU), Tokyo Jazz (Tokyo, JP), Umbrella (Chicago, US), Experimental Intermedia (New York, US), Biennale Wro (Wrocław, PL), SuperDeluxe (Tokyo, JP), and Fylkingen (Stockholm, SE).

He has collaborated with numerous artists, including Keith Rowe, Phil Minton, Ryoko Akama, Burkhard Beins, Paul Lovens, David Maranha, Peter Rehberg, Jérôme Noetinger, Zbigniew Karkowski, Kasper T. Toeplitz, Noid, Lucio Capece, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Aleksandra Słyż, Judith Hamann, and many others
