Atmosphere #3: The Abyss

Disquiet Junto 0739 invited us to consider the sympathetic resonance of vibrating strings.

I needed something with very resonant strings, so I reached for a guitar that I've never recorded before, a really nice Alvarez orchestra acoustic that I traded for last year. I recorded a few (okay, a lot of) layers of ebow, each track featuring a single note pattern played on an open string (with one cheat). I ran everything through a few pedals in various configurations: a Halo stereo delay, Walrus ARP-87 delay, Julia chorus, and Slo reverb. After about 6 layers of stacked and staggered ebow, I recorded a pass with plucked harmonics to add a rhythmic element without introducing any other instruments. I wanted the whole thing to be vibrating, analog strings.

I noticed when I listened to the pluck track in isolation, that I could hear the rest of the song playing in the background. The acoustic was picking up the sound from the studio monitors! How cool is that,

So I muted the plucks and recorded a fresh track of the playback recorded by holding the acoustic up directly in front of one of the monitors. I thought that circled back to the requirements neatly. I mixed the resonating strings back in with the other tracks, applied some stock Logic reverbs, and reported back here.
