Behrang Najafi, a musician and sound artist from Tehran, Iran, embarked on his musical journey as a guitarist and drummer in local bands. In 2010, he transitioned into the realm of electronic experimentation, adopting the moniker "Bescolour."

Beyond his solo pursuits, Behrang is a driving force behind the electronic/experimental duo "Temp-Illusion," alongside the talented Shahin Entezami. Together, they form an innovative partnership that pushes the boundaries of electronic experimental composition, bringing Shahin's unique contributions to the duo's evolving sound.

As a founding member of the SET festival in Tehran, Behrang actively contributes to the vibrant intersection of art and music. His collaborative works with Shahin have found a home on esteemed labels like “Zabte Sote/Opal Tapes”, “Soft Recordings”, “Flaming Pines”, and "PTP".

Behrang's sonic explorations have not only graced these labels but have also resonated at renowned venues and festivals worldwide. From the SET Experimental Art Events and CTM festival to the Roskilde Festival and Berghain Club, their live performances have left an indelible mark on diverse audiences.

In the midst of Tehran Contemporary Sounds, Mutek Japan, SETXCTM festival, Alice venue, and more, Behrang Najafi and Shahin Entezami's collaborative tapestry continues to evolve, creating a profound impact on the electronic and experimental music landscape.

Eternity is Now w/ zel x qiq

Katayoun aka discourse is a boundary-pushing and eclectic DJ, selector, and a longtime digger of Iranian music. With a knack for finding rarities, her mixtapes are skilfully curated, blending soothing melodies and funky rhythms with a soulful ability to shape sonically elusive environments that push beyond borders. As a music archivist and activist, Katayoun curates her sound around particular themes, shedding light on underknown genres and overlooked gems in Iranian music history and beyond, including Jazz and Latin rhythms. Being a dancer herself since early childhood, she knows how to move a dancefloor and engage an audience from beginning to end. Her skill and expertise have brought her to different stages, for example at the Melkweg as the support act of Sevdaliza and many other venues and radio communities across the Netherlands and abroad. This show, Jazz and Funk from Iran and Beyond, travels through jazz and funk from the 70s Iran all the way to sounds from Cairo, Ethiopia, and 'Tehrangeles'.

indigoblue is a musician and sound artist living in Toulouse, France. With a strong interest in collective and horizontal practices, they’re involved in several local organisations and actively contribute to Toulouse’s scene.

They’re a cofounder of the collective Le Comité des Fêtes, which organises festive events in an autonomous ethos, driving inspiration from sound system culture and anti-authoritarian readings. They’re also involved in the organisation of the festival Les Siestes and the decentralised community Global URL Nation.

indigoblue’s solo practice takes interest in experimental forms of electronic music, with a particular focus on drone and field recording. They engage in diverse mediums such as composition, production, live performance and djing. Additionally, they run ‘spinal spiral’, a recurring show on Toulouse-based web radio Egregore.

" I've been working on a collage including personal recordings and music with which I resonated. Most of the recordings were collected in the context of the preparation of festive events organized by a collective I'm a part of, Le Comité des Fêtes. Our events are organized in an autonomous and horizontal ethos, drawing heavy inspiration from sound system culture and anarchist readings. They usually take place in a community-driven space in Toulouse or temporary outdoor venues, where we try to think and act in resistance to oppressive and capitalist dynamics. This new edition of 24 hrs/Palestine will take place on April 6 and 7, midway between two important dates for Palestine: Land Day (March 30) and Prisoner’s Day (April 17). The contributions and interventions of this new edition are an attempt to think with these two days in the midst of the colonial war and genocide in Gaza.
 
Land and Freedom are not just slogans. They are daily struggles that the Palestinian people have been waging for decades. Marching on 1m² of earth or digging a few cm into a prison floor with a spoon are acts of resistance whose echoes will be reverberating around the world on April 6 and 7, 2024.

Land and freedom. These words will circulate across languages and geographies. Tierra y Libertad, الأرض والحرية, Земля та Свобода, Terre et Liberté... They are part of, and resonate within, a revolutionary and anti-colonialist pathway rooted in peasant movements for land, fights against slavery, fights against layers of oppression, for liberation, and for self-determination.

Reverberating resistances programme Radio Fantasia x Plotting Institute text: 
Reverberating Resistances is a translocal sharing of sonic statements, relating land-based struggles.  It is co-organised by Radio Fantasia and Plotting Institute. 
Overlapping liberation struggles show that colonialism is an international project, maintained by competition and collaboration between Western and non-Western empires. How to carry each other’s voices as they keep being silenced?  To counter violent imperial clashes and overlaps, we create a space for reverberations in solidarity with resistance to Israeli settler colonial project.  Participants resonate with Palestinian struggle from situated positions of Crimean Tatar, Ukranian, Armenian, Uyghur, Bashkort, Qazaq resistances to Russian, Turkish, Azerbaijani, Chinese states colonial projects. 

We start from grief for the lives taken and lands contaminated. To find the methods of sabotage, refusal and reclamation, we analyse the imperial overlaps and exchanges of deadly technologies. And then move towards collectively crafting a radical hope to echo across contexts.

"Last year, I was invited to perform at SPRH’s annual fundraiser event ‘Beats across Borders’, dedicated to supporting refugees in Paris. I created a 3 decks set for this occasion, weaving together artists from the SWANA region and beyond. As an artist (and a human mostly), engaging in charity events and volunteering to NGO° has been an integral part of my journey from the outset. 

In an age where struggles are disturbingly confined to the digital realm, and cultural workers are closely associated to their digital persona, I find peace in tangible actions. I thrive through them as a (very tiny) form of relief in myself amidst the out-of-control global chaos in the world - at different scales of intensity in each specific places. I believe that the value lies not in who does the most, but in each individual making a contribution, commensurate with their own capacity and resources - be it emotional or material. It’s a collective endeavor and journey we must undertake together, uniting in solidary to confront the challenges ahead. Only through community we can heal and progress in these uncertain times."

Layering sounds ranging from dark ambient to rythmic noise, her sets are build as liquid narratives haunted by voice samples from poetry to political archives. Navigating a wide range of genres and emotions, she sparks intensity through combining melodious sounds with more dissonant and brutal ones. Resident at Hong Kong Community Radio (HKCR) with her '𝕻𝖍𝖆𝖓𝖙𝖆𝖘𝖒𝖆𝖌𝖔𝖗𝖎𝖆’ show, she has played with several collectives across Europe.

°Sciences Po Refugee Help is an NGO that brings together over 100 students to help refugees in Paris with everything from legal help to French lessons. 

Each year SPRH puts together a fundraiser night of music called ‘Beats across Borders’ to celebrate local and refugee talents whilst directly funding refugee projects in Paris.

Use Knife is the Belgian-Iraqi band formed by Kwinten Mordijck, Saif Al-Qaissy and Stef Heeren, in collaboration with visual artist Youniss Ahamad.

In September 2022, Use Knife released their debut album, 'The Shedding of Skin,' on VIERNULVIER records (Gent, BE). This record revolved around human resilience and the courage to build a new life in an entirely different environment. One year later, Use Knife returned with ‘Sowieso F***ed’, a provocative anthem characterized by its chaotic blend of samples and sounds, “There is nothing half-hearted about Use Knife as a live act. You get the distinct feeling that each member is totally energised by this iteration of their collective art. A Belgian article dubbed their sound “electronic outsider music,” yet for me it is an all-embracing vortex that allows those experiencing it a chance to plunge, headfirst, into a hypnotic state that veers between a dreamlike trance and a sensual workout.” wrote The Quietus.

On April 8 2024, Use Knife released the remix 10” vinyl EP 'Peace Carnival' through Berlin's Morphine Records. Zoë Mc Pherson, Rabih Beaini, and Muqata’a have reinterpreted three tracks from Use Knife's debut album. The EP challenges the narrative around peace through its percussions, glitches, distortions, and Muslimgauze-esque minimalism to rethink and transform perceptions of justice and freedom.

This year, Carnival’s usual satire and mockery target any one-sided ‘peace’.

Since February 2023, Use Knife has been hosting a monthly radio show titled 'Feeding the Gentry' on Palestinian station 'Radio alHara' (also featured on NTS Radio, Rinse.fm, and Kiosk Radio).

Developed from a commission by CTM Festival as an audio/visual project in collaboration with Tarik Barri, and inspired by their 2017 theme of ‘Fear Anger Love’ and its relationship to his childhood following the 1979 Iranian revolution, the record reveals a dramatic blend of acoustic Persian instrumentation and contemporary electronics. Sote aims to devise an idealised fusion of the musical heritage and tradition of Iran with the forward-thinking vision which has propelled his storied career producing techno, hardcore and computer music for labels like Warp, Ge-stell, Morphine and Repitch.

Now living in Tehran, his music has frequently grappled with the strict cultural restrictions imposed in his country over the past few decades, finding a space and setting to nurture new developments in experimental sound and performance; first documented on last year’s ‘Hardcore Sounds From Tehran’ on Opal Tapes.

Working with Arash Bolouri who plays the santour (Persian hammered dulcimer), and Behrouz Pashaei on the long-necked, four-string setar, Sote frames and responds to their traditional artistry. On occasions he directly manipulates the music emanating from their ancient instruments, cultivating and thickening up a surreal and beautiful tonality plucked from their strings with a series of processing techniques, but mostly each track is a peaceful arrangement and partnership, Sote electro-acoustically augmenting their movements within his own cybernetic framework. The resulting form gives the impression of semi-improvised gesture between three skilled partners, a deft call and response that uses digital techniques to extend the intentions of the performers into a modern, shady, but ultimately optimistic narrative; creating an paradoxical amalgam of the mythic and the profane as strong as any folk music.

Across the six tracks the strange strings tend to conduct the overall experience, tuned to the unusual colour and complex microtonality found in the classical music of Iran. Blurts of noise, sour tones, and a vaguely technoid or dubwise impression expose the inner rhythm and counterpoint embedded in this strummed music, building a new understanding and doorway into unfamiliar timbres and environmental patterns which govern us. At times it finds the artist at his most compositionally delicate and measured—listen to the sense of space afforded to a beautiful solo that drifts throughout “Boghze Esfahen” and then into “Plural”—and redoubles his focus on what new insight might be gained from the emotional, mathematical and polyrhythmic principles underpinning Persian music.

The electronic parts on final track “Holy Error” are sourced from Sote’s residency at EMS Stockholm in late 2016, utilising their remarkable in-house modular Serge system and divesting from conventional Iranian tonal motifs for a spikier duel with the instruments.

ALEXANDRE BAZIN​ is a member of the ​Groupe de Recherches Musicales​, better known as the GRM, for which he writes documentaries about music for the radio. He is passionate about experimental music and more specifically acousmatic music created by members of the GRM, such as Bernard Parmegiani, Francois Bayle and Guy Reibel. Due to his background as a classical and jazz pianist, Alexandre Bazin is also passionate about instrumental music by the likes of Steve Reich, Erik Satie, Brian Eno ... This album attempts to synthesize these two worlds that are so dear to the composer, either in symbiosis or in opposition to one another with simple and loose melodies as its main theme. The use of analog synthesizers and acoustic sounds are at the heart of the composer's creative process. His music has already been heard thanks to Umor Rex Records in Mexico and the Moogfest festival in the USA.

OCEANS :

"Oceans" ​was written for Marimba, Piano and Buchla Music Easel, in 4 movements around the theme of the Ocean. Simple and loose melodies, played on piano and Buchla. They rotate around the marimba which evokes breathing and the rhythm of the swell. Suspended melodies reminiscent of Generative music although in this case they are an improvisation around a simple motif. Through its title and movements, this work evokes a reflection around climate change and our relationship to Oceans: water, breathing, the repetition of movement, but also its immensity which reminds us of our limits. The piece was performed by Alexandre Bazin on Piano, Buchla Music Easel and Marimba as well as Gabriel Benlolo on Marimba, a member of the Radio France Philharmonic orchestra.
