Michael Abel-Larsen, known as DJ Banel or Michael Banel, hails from Copenhagen and is a founder and co-owner of the legendary Iboga Records, IbogaTech and Sofa Beats labels. 

With a DJ career starting in 1988, his musical journey has travelled through more than three decades, countless countries and an unimaginable number of stages. From the early acid house era of the 80s to founding Iboga in the 90s and now, Banel has been at the forefront of trends in the electronic scene since the early days to whip dance floors into a frenzy around the world.

Today you can find Banel dropping either massive techno bangers or destroying dance floors with thumping progressive trance sets. Whichever style you choose, though, one feature of his performances remains the same: expertly crafted arrangements take rapturous listeners through the peaks and troughs of the genre on a musical journey to elation.

One of the international scene’s established taste-makers, Banel’s access to the freshest sounds and sense for ‘the next big thing’ has taken him around the globe from the dusty outback of Australia to the hot deserts of Israel, from the beaches of Mexico to the ice-cold midpoint of Russia and beyond. Driven by pure passion for the music and the scene, there is no sign of Banel slowing down any time soon.

Banel is also one half of the duo MVMB, releasing the full-length album The Sleeper Must Awaken on Iboga in 2016 and the follow-up Phase 01 in 2019, released on Ibogatech.

This Disco Gecko Recordings episode features TOBY MARKS, and a mix of relaxing, uplifting music to float away on. Toby Marks is a recording artist, performer, producer and record label owner, best known for his eclectic global dance and chill-out music. Emerging from 1980’s acid house, he has gone on to record and perform worldwide as Banco de Gaia, fusing house, dub, prog rock, jazz and world music elements. More recently has developed a growing interest in electroacoustic composition and other areas of ambient electronic music. He is particularly interested in immersive sonic environments and the meeting point of deliberate and random composition. He is currently focussing on ambient works drawing on soundscape recordings from man and nature blended with simple but beautiful musical motifs. In performance he incorporates video imagery, generated live where possible, to create a truly engrossing and uplifting experience.

Microcosmos presents PANDA ON THE BAMBOO TREE and his DJ set including tracks from the newest "Xtradimensional Motions" album, some works from the previous albums and some unreleased stuff as well, not played anywhere else and special for this occasion. Panda On the Bamboo Tree is a musician from Poland and has been developing his project for about 8 years, although his first tracks in this particular chill out style were made few years back. His approach to psychedelic and chill out music have been developing through all these years. He is still improving, claiming there's still a lot to do in terms of skills and musicianship. But, if anyone would like to experience Panda's music, listen to the new album "Xtradimensional Motions". Variegated electronics and deep bass are harmoniously diluted with ethnic motifs and even acoustic Indian vocals. The musician combines genres such as downtempo, chillout, lounge and others, creating unique psychedelic music piece by piece. Some compositions reach the most secret corners of consciousness, others make the body move to the rhythm of the melodic pattern.

This Aphid series episode features PSIBINDI's latest psy-trance release 'Sentient Rays EP' with Aphid Moon and Mechanimal, released on Aphid Records in March 2022 to commemorate international women's day. The EP reached the top 5 releases in Beatport. The mix also features new Psibindi collaborations with Colin Bennun (OOOD) and Mindfield (John Phantasm). Psibindi is an international DJ and prolific vocalist best known for her distinctive selection of powerful psychedelic trance, interwoven with her signature psy-FX vocals. The classically trained Indian singer and accomplished psychedelic trance DJ has made waves as a producer in recent years. Signed to UK label Aphid Records, Psibindi has teamed up with psy-trance maestros Aphid Moon and Mechanimal. The characteristic sounds of Psibindi come to life in her fourth collaborative EP 'Sentient Rays', teaming up again with Aphid Moon and Mechanimal. Her track with Mechanimal ‘Luminous Rays’ was hand picked by the award winning DJ Jaguar and played on her BBC Introducing Dance show on BBC Radio 1 and then again on BBC Asian Network. In 2020, Binary Star [which she co-produced with Aphid Moon], caught the attention of global superstar DJ, Nina Kraviz, who played the track during her eclectic Hot Steel DJ set at Cavo Paradiso Club in Mykonos.  As founder of global arts platform Psy-Sisters, she continues to push the boundaries for female artists in the music industry. Their Global South campaign was featured in Mixmag in Summer 2021.

Astral projection (or astral travel) is an interpretation of an out-of-body experience (OBE) that assumes the existence of an "astral body" separate from the physical body and capable of travelling outside it. Astral projection or travel denotes the astral body leaving the physical body to travel in an astral plane. The idea of astral travel is rooted in common worldwide religious accounts of the afterlife in which the consciousness' or soul's journey or "ascent" is described in such terms as "an... out-of body experience, wherein the spiritual traveller leaves the physical body and travels in his/her subtle body (or dreambody or astral body) into ‘higher’ realms. It is frequently reported in association with dreams, and forms of meditation.

Patients have reported feelings similar to the descriptions of astral projection induced through various hallucinogenic and hypnotic (including self-hypnotic) means. There is no scientific evidence that there is any measurable manifestation of a consciousness or soul which is separate from neural activity, and there is no scientific evidence for the contention that one can consciously leave the body and make observations. Attempts to verify that such has occurred have consistently failed in spite of the variety of pseudoscientific claims to the contrary.

Charlotte Walsh is a legal academic at Leicester Law School, University of Leicester, where she runs a course on Criminology, with a particular focus on drug policy. Her research specialism is on the interface between psychedelics and the law, viewed from a liberal, human rights-based perspective, and she has published widely on this subject – in journals and edited collections – along with being a regular speaker at psychedelic conferences.
She is on the Steering Committee of the Ayahuasca Defense Fund and as such is involved with legal defence work, education and protection, along with advocacy for policy reform.
