Long-Eared Owl

This is, to me, the bravest LBJ (little brown job) of all. During the breeding season Meadow pipits perform what is know as ‘parachute’ display flights, in order to attract a mate. It literally gives itself away as if singing ‘i’m all yours, take me!’ (or the peregrine falcon will…). You can hear the beautiful descending notes in this recording, made on a windy day.

Recorded this night thunderstorm with a Sennheiser double mid-side system.  The rain was pretty heavy over a grove of aspen, with some broader leafed vegetation on the forest floor.  The storm lasted for a few hours, I picked out this section to share for now.

I was in Prilep, Pelagonia province, North Macedonia in October 2022 during the Macedonian Uprising Day (October 11). I made some recordings of the celebrations in the evening and also of my hike to the Markovi Kuli (Marko's Towers) in the morning, a truly beautiful place.

J'étais à Prilep, province de Pélagonie, Macédoine du Nord en octobre 2022 lors du Jour de l'Insurrection Macédonienne (11 octobre). J'ai fait quelques enregistrements des célébrations le soir et aussi de ma randonnée jusqu'aux Markovi Kuli (Tours de Marko) le matin, un endroit vraiment magnifique.

Recorded at Nimboi-Binderay National Park. 20 minutes of the more interesting sounds out of an 10 hour overnight recording. Yellow-bellied Glider calls, Southern Boobook, Australian Owlet Nightjar, Sugar Glider, and something skulking around the sclerophyll deep litter close to the the microphone rig busily chewing around 11:30-12:00min (I'm guessing an Eastern Quoll or Bandicoot. The Greater Glider pictured is actually silent and does not vocalise.

This recording might feature the most intense elk rut in history. Ok, probably not, but it is very intense special. It features the sounds of a herd of over 200 elk in the middle of the rut, with some males getting as close to 7 feet from the microphones.

Governors is a modular sound installation and performance in which the interaction between the acoustic properties of a space and movement is made audible and tangible through the materiality of microphones. This interplay between sound, space, and movement creates a dynamic game of layered feedback. The installation and performance provide space for both collective listening and individual positioning of the audience. Visitors are invited to move through the space and create their own listening experience. This positioning and active participation in the listening process contribute to the emergence of evolving sound configurations and make it possible to explore different soundscapes. The project emphasizes the interaction between the physical space and acoustics, inviting a more conscious experience of sound in relation to the environment and the body. The result is a unique, ever-changing auditory experience that is both individually and collectively experienced.

Governors

Raphael Malfliet is a sound artist and composer. His work focuses on investigating location and situation-specific sound determined by social, historical, and ecological factors. This results in a field recording practice accompanied by an active listening practice linked to reading and understanding the influence of sound on a landscape and vice versa.
