Governors is the first part of an ongoing audio research that focuses on the interaction of multiple feedback sounds generated by the bodies and instruments (in this case electric basses) of three players. Just as in cybernetics, the governor regulates the amount of feedback during this study by means of the actual feedback. What occurs is a seemingly stagnant stream of sound with inner moving cellular structures that leaves a felt trace after having taken place. This dance of patience connects directly to Feldman and Lucier’s philosophy of letting sounds come to you instead of pushing them around. Therefore the governor must wield a democratic approach not only to give every sound the space it deserves but also to find its own non- dictatorial role.

Governors is a modular sound installation and performance in which the interaction between the acoustic properties of a space and movement is made audible and tangible through the materiality of microphones. This interplay between sound, space, and movement creates a dynamic game of layered feedback. The installation and performance provide space for both collective listening and individual positioning of the audience. Visitors are invited to move through the space and create their own listening experience. This positioning and active participation in the listening process contribute to the emergence of evolving sound configurations and make it possible to explore different soundscapes. The project emphasizes the interaction between the physical space and acoustics, inviting a more conscious experience of sound in relation to the environment and the body. The result is a unique, ever-changing auditory experience that is both individually and collectively experienced.

Raphael Malfliet is a sound artist and composer. His work focuses on investigating location and situation-specific sound determined by social, historical, and ecological factors. This results in a field recording practice accompanied by an active listening practice linked to reading and understanding the influence of sound on a landscape and vice versa.
