ABOUT THIS TRACK:
In their fourth studio album, Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 1, Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes, Matthew Putman, Hilliard Greene and Federico Ughi again push the boundaries of their genre-defying music to explore new influences and negative space. The second track, “SignGhost Theatre” offers a particularly elegant representation of their more muted and orchestral sound. Putman plays Impressionistic melodies on piano, incorporating ambiguous tonality and extended harmonies. Holmes delivers nostalgic, lyrical clarinet solos, while Greene offers his own haunting and versatile arco performance on stand-up bass. Ughi diverges from steady rhythms to offer uniquely subdued and open drumming, and Carter returns to his perennial role as a multi-instrumental, chamber-focused facilitator, lending an added measure of coherence between musicians. The song embodies the mystery it’s intended to convey, gliding through expansive realms of the album’s quietly ambitious project.

Our 62nd release is the 4th installment in our KILLED BY DEF compilation series featuring the work of DJ/producer THE WHITE SHADOW!!! The WHITE SHADOW of Norway started as a club DJ in 1978. He went on to win the Norwegian DMC battles in 1988 and 1989 and began producing Hip Hop in 1990. In 1991 he moved to New York and became a member of the BDP POSSE and produced tracks for CRITICAL MASZ and THE WARRIORS OF SHAOLIN. He moved back to Norway in 1994 and still continued to produce tracks for some of Hip Hop's biggest names. THE WHITE SHADOW "THEN & NOW" is an 8 track retrospective of his work from the early 90's to the present day. The newer material features MC'S RAEKWON, KRS-ONE, KOOL G RAP, RAS KASS, and MASTA ACE just to name a few. "THEN & NOW" is limited to 300 vinyl copies and will never be repressed.

White Shadow Feat: Warriors of Shaolin - Network The Knowledge (1991)

In 1995/96, rap icon Ice Cube ignited a feud with rising talent Common Sense from Chicago. Though the situation was short-lived, it made a lasting impact, and the story has been told many times over, but in nearly all of those stories, a perhaps trivial, but notable factor has been left out, the smart part I played in that story. 

The art for this episode is from the cover of Caught In The Middle Magazine, of which I was the Co-Owner, alongside Jason "J-Bird" Cook. This was the first issue of the magazine and also Common's first time being on a magazine cover, and was released in December of 1994. Designed by Boom Design!

Up to this point, I would guess that most anyone interested in listening to this podcast has thus far been aware of all the artists I’ve covered, but Rhyme might be the first exception. For the entire of my career in the music business, from my days running a home studio(Rage Cage Studios) in the late 80s to the early 90s, to my various other adventures, I’ve always sought to be an artist advocate, especially for those who I feel are the unheard. In 1995, Rhyme, from Chicago, was one of those artists to make an instant and long lasting impression on me. This is the story of his “Warrior’s Ink” Demo, as well as how his career developed from that moment, as well as how Daddy-O, from Stetsasonic was involved.
