"A selection of records I have been digging in the North of France and Paris for the last months. The mix is influenced by my move last year from Tokyo (Japan) to Roubaix (France). Excited to share these sounds that have been entering my life lately: French and different oriental influenced folk and jazz with often medieval structure elements or instruments. Also one Egyptian and one Japanese record. This collection of tracks has been also inspired by my nomadic like lifestyle lately, travelling a lot, always on the move and encountering talented, raw, honest and inspiring people along the way."

"This is not really a “dj” mix…the styles are too diverse to make any coherent segueing possible except on a couple of occasions, with music ranging from the dark melancholic experimentalism of Einstürzende Neubauten to the uplifting polyrhythmic songs of Zawose Queens…and a multitude of styles in between. 

In my opinion a wide range of styles fits the purpose of radio better than a DJ mix…but, in truth, I’m probably just finding an excuse to justify the many moods I’m experiencing lately. And I bought a new A9 mixer recently which allows for an external effects send so I plugged in my Space Echo pedal which I usually use with live shows and tried to blend the unblendable behind a wash of delays and feedback! I hope you enjoy the journey."

Outsiders: Pingipung w/ GK Machine @ Kiosk Radio 24.09.2024

From the forthcoming album "Nuits Sans Nuit", to be released on May 30th.

Pierre Bastien and Michel Banabila return with Nuits Sans Nuit, their second collaboration following their Baba Soirée debut from 2023. Recorded as an intuitive exchange between Rotterdam and Valencia, the album emerged from a simple ping-pong process: Banabila sculpted sounds and atmospheres, to which Bastien responded with his distinctive instrumental palette: flute-augmented cornet, mechanised log drum, and more. Mixed by Banabila, the result is a raw yet immersive work that resonates with a somnambulant, wide-awake presence.

Pierre Bastien: "When Michel had finished mixing and editing, I listened to the whole record and sensed a dreamlike quality in it. It reminded me of a book I read years ago: ‘Nuits Sans Nuit Et Quelques Jours Sans Jour’ by Michel Leiris.  Around that same time, some fifty years ago, I was playing in Nu Creative Methods with Bernard Pruvost, a duo that appears on the Nurse With Wound list. Since then, Pruvost has turned to painting, and his work is as dreamlike as our music. We asked him to contribute one of his paintings for the album cover."

Nuits Sans Nuit unfolds through shifting shades of melancholy. "I don't know how to describe the feeling of these crazy times we live in," says Banabila. "Les plus désespérés sont les chants les plus beaux,”  Bastien quotes De Musset. Wordless yet deeply expressive, the album invites listeners into a space of contemplation, where meaning emerges through immersion — like ritual music carrying an unspoken message. Echoes of saudade, blues, fado, and soleá surface in the duo’s playful noise, reimagined through their singular vocabulary.

浮音飞线 [Fú yīn fēi xiàn] / “Floating Sound, Flying Wires” [Dali: 2010-2020]
s&S was based continuously in various far-flung locations within the peripheries of mainland China from 2006-2021. During that time, the radio stream operation continued, while we also carried on with the creation of original content and the recording of local sounds. Your Remote Operator would make regular attempts to transmit live shows from each of the home studios where we were based, though piercing the Great Firewall consistently was often a real challenge. This hour is assembled exclusively of excerpts from thematically China-centric broadcasts made in Dali, Yunnan province at s&S’s Banana Hut Hideaway studio. It includes original sounds/ music, remixes, field recordings, noises and voices nabbed from live Chinese FM & shortwave radio. Most of these bits are lightly edited excerpts that were originally crafted live on the air.  Behold these floating sounds and flying wires!
