Flitting between seemingly improvised and structured playing but sticking with a plan, I enjoyed the change of emotion throughout the piece..... and finally the clarity from the solo voice and organ.... order is restored....

Incredible!  Simultaneously ominous, engaging, and tranquil, and with a delightful sound palette!

The piece is divided into 8 sections, which each time extends followed by a number sequence: 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, and 2. In this case, the last section becomes twice longer than the previous one, representing the effect of longing, which means Pratiksha in Indian language. The harmony is based on the chromatic transposition down of the chord of three pitches until it supplement the first chord (upper tetrachord) to the full Indian raga scale.
Also, I was inspired by gamaka’s definition that they are basically connective forces and the manner of travel from one note to another. There are 32 ways of gamaka’s, which are mainly responsible for the aesthetic enjoyments in the entire performance, differing from each artist. My intention not to represent gamaka's, but use them in such a way, that they could transform into microtonal ornamentation of the melodic cycles.
The work is commissioned by the Wigmore Hall with the support of André Hoffmann, President of the Fondation Hoffmann, a Swiss grant-making foundation. The world is dedicated to the ensemble Apartment House.

It was such an honor to write a piece for Molly Joyce, one of my best friends and biggest musical inspirations. The piece examines how technology enables and hinders us. At times, the live performer and the unique toy organ act in complete symbiosis with a fixed electronic track. This relationship breaks down throughout the piece, interrupted by moments of violent stasis. The performer’s raw, unprocessed voice and instrument are only heard in the last section of the piece, still modulated by percussion in the electronics.  The piece’s structure resembles that of a drastically slowed-down social media feed, in which various data sources inhabit and take up mental space in mundane but subliminally powerful ways.

The piece was originally written in 2017, and then drastically changed for this newest version. Performed and recorded by the inimitable Molly Joyce.
