Some time ago I asked Donato to compile the “Rome” edition of the 200th podcast for electronique.it.

His response to this challenge is a techno mix that I can best describe as an intense, intimate and evocative portrait of the reality that is Rome. While drawing on a wide range of source material and inspiration from the past, he constructs a deeply personal mix that is directed towards the future. It is, in a word, epic!

The podcast is full of music released in the 90s. Not all of it, but a lot of it. Nothing to do with thinking no one’s making good tunes at the moment and everything released in the 90s was brilliant. Just wanted to do something that was quite manky and a bit mad… A lot of the tunes sound quite grungy and a bit shady, but that’s what we went for on this one. Some of it’s not really mixed, it’s not a DJ set so it doesn’t really have to be. Lots of tracks are just mashed into each other, sometimes using field recordings or sound from films and interviews, and other times just using bits from different songs, like Pan Sonic madness. There’s no real theme to it, the audio extracts in there are all unrelated, some from a trip to Japan, a bit from a youtube interview, bits from a film i watched while working on the podcast. None of it’s new apart from a few bits from ourselves. Hopefully there’s a lot of stuff inside people haven’t heard.

Heir apparent to the UK techno throne, Clouds have been gaining credibility with each release. With their LP Ghost Systems Rave, 12"s on Fifth Wall and Soma, and their latest Tannhauser Acid Works EP, they've reached beyond the warehouse and into the wild apocalyptic rubble of po-mo UK hardcore. 

Their lead track Blood Skating is an industrial blitz of terror-beats, laced with a haunting, Aphex-grade vocal pad. It sets the tone for this incredible release, which they've A&R'd out of thin air, apparently from their mates in Dundee, Perth, and the surrounding mud-lands. 

The 12" sampler features DJ Hesburger's 'Roll Up Your Sleeves, Welcome to the Dance,' an awesome slice of overdriven acid electro that sounds like MPIA3 on MDMA. Jane 'Fuck Your Alliance' is proper mental brain dance, while Dance Company's ‘Berzerkerz’ sounds like an unearthed hardcore anthem from 92.

Zeitgeber is the duo of Speedy J and Lucy. Both renowned techno artists in their own  right, they’ve teamed up together to create a spellbinding album of abstract electronics. As  the owner of Electric Deluxe, Speedy J has overseen one of modern techno’s finest  imprints. He was there at techno’s beginnings as a DJ and producer, and he continues to  stand at its avant-garde, pushing his artists and himself to continue to innovate.

The same  goes for Stroboscopic Artefacts head Lucy, whose young imprint has never failed to  impress in its ambition and output. Lucy has a clear vision of what he wants with his  imprint, and across the label’s three album releases you can see that it has been  achieved. Zeitgeber marks a new era for Stroboscopic Artefacts. Considered as an artist with an impeccably tight reputation, the bulk of October's output exhumes an enigmatic strain of techno that's currently being pumped through the veins of the underground community. His releases been housed by the likes of Fred P's Soul People Music, BRSTL and Will Saul's Aus Music camp – whilst Smith’s kept himself busy operating TANSTAAFL (There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch) alongside John Osborn. Lately though, it's his stint with the superlative Swedish outfit, Skudge that’s been garnering him the most kudos, releasing both the upstanding Empires EP and, perhaps most notably, this year's Gate 2 Yesterday on Skudge's self-titled imprint. Revealing that he’ll also be releasing his debut album via Skudge, Smith promises that he’ll stray away from his usual material and showcase a body of work that explains “what he’s really about.”

“I recorded this mix on a Thursday a couple of months back.  The sun was shining, my windows were open and I was practising for a gig in London that weekend. I thought it would be the perfect day to record a vinyl set, so I gathered up a few records around me, new and old, just ones that I love, and I went to work. Perhaps truly haphazard behaviour on my part but, truth be known, I don’t always plan out my sets when recording them, I just let the music be my guide.  In this case this mix just seemed to really come together, and when I listened back, I hoped it would be worthy of the great Electronic Explorations.  Thankfully, it was!  * I send my apologies for the skip at 17:52, my cat Bear came flying past and clipped the deck on his way out the window.  miaow.  Enjoy!”

“For this mix, Rob handed over some tracks, and I added some of my own. These were all tunes we agreed kept to the vibe of that party – brooding, dark, insistent, hard and a bit twisted. I especially like the Violetshaped remixes, we’d discovered them via some friends in Serbia, and they certainly blow a lot of other stuff out of the water. Broken and syncopated. Some pads and strings were added to make the mix more interesting, to give some contrast with the brutal beats. There’s a few non-techno tracks in there as well, including a snippet of an acid track due for next year on Combat (“Rebuild”). Hope you like.” ~ Stormfield

“When Rob asked us to provide a warehouse mix for Electronic Explorations, we were very excited at the possibilities of which tracks to use for the mix. To us a warehouse rave is all about big sounding records, industrial venues and a crowd that are totally up for it. So when we recorded the mix, we gathered a selection of old tracks that have a lot of inspiration for us and new tracks that we think have a similar aesthetic and attitude. We wanted the mix to be dark and driving, with a movement between the more percussive, rhythmic and melodic sounds within techno.” ~ AnD

New York based dub king Brendon Moeller was so kind to make this amazing hypnotic podcast for our beloved BALANS series. Brendon has been making waves in the EDM scene for almost 20 years now and is well known for his Beat Pharmacy and Echologist monnikers. And with his imprint Steadfast he delivers the highest quality dancefloor music around nowadays. A new album is due in april on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label, but first he will drop an Echologist remix on Wolfskuil Ltd by the end of march!

As always we had a small Q&A with the South African master:

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

I have done a remix for Wolfskuil artist Roger Gerressen and for ESHU on their recently launched imprint with the same name.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Eat well, exercise, sleep and only smoke good weed and stick with beer!

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

Once upon a Thursday afternoon, a middle-aged man decided to embark on a creative mission. That mission would be to lay down approximately 60 minutes of groovy psychedelic electronic music that would take the listeners on a journey that would enable them to transcend time and space.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

The mix is the first mix I completed incorporating a modified korg monotribe. It was done in my home studio using ableton and a UC-33e controller. Recorded in one take, no rehearsing.

05.Were do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have an album dropping on EDLX in April and will be touring Europe all of April and May. The first single from the album features mixes by Tommy Four Seven and Jonas Kopp.

We have a very special guest for this episode. Man of the moment and one of the artists that sets the course for techno as we speak, Shifted, is on duty for episode 19. Noone knows exactly who is behind this mysterious monnniker, all we know he is no newcomer to the electronic arena. His debutalbum 'Crossed Paths' on Luke Slater's Mote Evolver label, is a stunning collection of tracks: rich in textures and with an almost physical ambiance. 01.What is you relationship with Balans?

No relationship to mention really, i'm just a fan of both the label, which is putting out consistently great music and of Darko as a producer.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Try to eat well, not drink to much and enjoy life. Stress is the cause of so much ill health, I think if you have a healthy mind then your body follows.

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

I just wanted to do something more aimed at the Dancefloor. the intro and the outro also have some processed field recordings that i added on top to make it a little more interesting.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

Usually i'm playing vinyl, but i just recently moved to Berlin and as a result have no Technics here at the moment. I put this together in Ableton Live.

05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have a collaboration with Edit Select that just came out on Semantica, I'm also working on a full EP for them. Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.

I like to work out, I cycle a lot and go to the gym. Besides that I try to eat healthy. It helps me to stay focussed and feel good.

3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

At the moment I'm reorganizing my record collection and I found some records I wanted to play again. So it turned out a deep techno mix with some of the older tracks and some new stuff.  

4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

I used 2 Technics SL-1210MK2 and an Allen & Heath Mixer.

5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?


The 30th of march I will be doing the next Imprint party at Trouw with Surgeon. Besides that I will be playing at nice parties in Holland and abroad. And at the moment I'm working on new tracks in my new studio.
