Patrice Bäumel - DISTRIKT x Robot Heart - Burning Man 2023

Hello everyone, last year, as Christina and I made our first journey to Burning Man, excitement would be understated with plans to deliver an electrifying set at the iconic Robot Heart Bus after Lee Burridge. However, nature had other plans — unprecedented heavy rains and flooding at the event meant that, unfortunately, my performance could not go ahead. 

On my recent US tour, our ever-supportive friend, Benjamin from Robert Heart and the rest of the crew, extended a heartfelt invitation to play at their unique San Francisco-Oakland residency. 

This mix is not just a set; it's a token of appreciation to all who were there and an offering to those who couldn’t join us. 

Immerse yourself in a slice of the magic from that night. Whether you're listening from near or far, I hope it transports you right there with us. 

Looking forward to the next gathering at the Robot Heart residency in San Francisco / Oakland on May 9th.

In honor of releasing our 40th live mix from our Desert Hearts Festival, we couldn't be happier to share with you the most talked about set in the history of DH. Everything we knew about live House & Techno was completely blown away during this set as Rodriguez Jr. gave us the performance of a life time. Described by him as "One of the best parties he's ever played", the vibe was on another level, the music was through the roof, and his performance had everyone in a musical frenzy. We all had a feeling that Rodriguez Jr. was going to be the highlight of our Desert Hearts Spring Festival, but we had no idea that he was about to set the bar for every DJ & Performer at our festival moving forward. This was a real bitch... I couldn't seem to get my hands on a full, legitimate acapella of this track, but I was determined to at least make something based around the original. I had premeditated the whole thing a few months in advance, namely about a month before the end of my last semester in college. In Orchestration, we always had the opportunity to write a short piece of our own for the ensembles to play at the various workshops. I was already working on this instrumental and wrote out some stuff for a string and woodwind octet, recorded it and incorporated it (however sparingly) into this track.

This track was fully commissioned by a good friend and generous donor, Bill Jagnow. A veteran of the horrors of music school, Bill gave me a few solid pep-talk emails and it always helped a shit load... so I was really determined to give this one everything I had. Bill, I hope you like it.

Lady Gaga - Scheiße (Professor Kliq's Fist of Music School Mix)

The last of the commissioned works, this was a request by a good friend and fellow music student, Doug Raymond AKA "Lord Irwin" (you can find him here on SC). 

I really wanted to do something in my own classic style and get back to the stuff I honestly and truly like and not try to compete with the direction that a lot of dance and electronic music is going. Thusly, this is a lot more disco, a lot more cinematic... I think I was able to dig up a lot of the old styles I got into and, thusly, was able to get a lot more out that way.

I like to imagine sometimes where the music will travel to. Who it will be given to or shared with. Whether it will be played at an after party in London or listened to on a set of headphones while watching the sun rise from behind a mountain in Tibet. I wonder which tracks you'll fall in love with instantly and which will grow on you as time passes. 

I know this is a really long mix and the journey into it and out the other side takes some commitment but, on the plus side, it saves you having to look for anything else to play for ages and ages.

It’s been a while since I played DISTRIKT last. After this years experience I’m somewhat kicking myself. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd at Burning Man so wild and fun. The party was electric. Fire! And, it was only Tuesday. ‘Pacing it’ was obviously out of the question for the five thousand or so that joined me. The Robot Heart bus rolled up and plugged in. Hoj tore the place up before me. Our day party extended into night and most of us left with a smile on our faces and an electricity that carried us forward. Beautiful people swung above the crowd in a birdcage (is that safe I kept asking myself in my head)and hips wiggled and swung while the multi-level dance floor bumped and bounced. Basically, best day party at Burning Man ever ever. So, thank you DISTRIKT for giving me an extended set and an amazing party to play. Let’s do it again next year. It’s a date?

"It was a warm Thursday night and I rode up with my crew to the Mayan Warrior linked up with Robot Heart and couldn’t believe my eyes. 
In 9 years of Burning Man I had never seen so many people at one party. 
I always choose to play just one event during the week at Black Rock, preferring to spend the rest of my days and nights exploring and enjoying all the various levels of this incredible experience without the hassle of running from one party to the next. And preparing for my set around 7am I sensed that this was going to be a magnificent morning. I was a little nervous but I had those good butterflies swirling and as the vermilion hue of the pre-dawn began to rise, I stepped up and played this set that you can listen to now. 
I will never forget it.
Being invited to play the Friday sunrise on both buses was a dream come true and I’d like to thank all the thousands and thousands of people that joined me for this special moment and to the dedicated heroes of the Burn that made it possible.
