DJ couple Nika & Martin, have been digging dope records together for the best part of 15 years, so it was a real pleasure to have them share a special soft spot theme - focusing on music that represents key moments of their relationship over the years. The records are killer and the stories make ya heart warm - what's not to like! 

I keep things very downtempo and experimental for the first 45 with a selection of slow jams from all around the globe.

For the last show of the 2023 top gizza, koen.fm, joins me in the studio. He shares a Soft Spot focusing on the music he plays in the classroom during his day job as a school teacher. There's some funny and heart warming stories in there, including highly rated song suggestions from an 8yr old and Koen sharing music that actually makes plants grow (true story!!).

The whole two hours is a subtle ride through ambient, triphop, ethereal instrumentals and all round downtempo goodness to sooth the soul.

Hailing from Corsica, U-Died (formerly known as Mare @mareopaq) is a seasoned artist who yet remains an up and comer. His dig and own productions (we'll discover some unreleased ones in this mix btw) take roots in the 80’s and 90’s repertoire. He is in the other hand the co-founder of local imprint OPAQ and collective Audiocult.
Through a wide panorama, including newbeat, techno, synthpop and early-trance, we can feel the 80’s fever and the anime/video game OST influence while the strong core and brute narrative are shifting towards a soothing sentimental charm.

Ben English is a Berlin based English DJ who excels in uplifting and captivating a dance floor. Having his roots based in old school deep house, the concrete basslines and timeless grooves that feature in his sets have become a staple of his sound. His selection features a rich and varied catalogue that is tightly mixed together and extremely easy to move to.
With a wealth of experience underneath him you can be rest assured he will deliver a concrete set that will keep you glued to the floor.

For the latest Softs Spots show we welcome the lovely @adren_alina to the studio, whilst visiting from Berlin. She runs the wicked @smoovemoceanrec label along with her partner @atree-music. Alina shared a soft spot focusing on some of her favourite female artists from the late 80s and 90s. Expect synth fused house, funk pumpers and plenty of interesting stories behind her selection. Super happy to have her in the studio, she is a cracking DJ with impeccable taste!

SpillCast 22 - Denman

The fifteenth mix in the series comes in via the form of a live recording from the legend that is, Lee Renacre aka 100Hz.

Originally formed of three members and now ran by Lee, 100Hz is a prolific electronic recording artist who’s been producing the funkier side of house and techno since 1989. Known for his sultry, stripped down grooves paired with sinister vocals and odd beat patterns, he has carved a truly unique style of electronic music blurring the lines between house, techno and jazz. An iconic track, 'Whisper' is however anything but sinister - full of hope, the track meanders through introspective thoughts on love and positivity. 

Early releases on Optimism as well as his own Format label laid the foundations for a back catalogue of highly sought after records including EPs on Oblong and Pacific in the mid 90s right up to the current day with releases on the minimal labels, Amphia and Curtea Veche. 

100Hz was recognised by Mixmag in 1997 as one of the pioneering UK producers of the time, helping to create a new genre of dance music. His sound pioneered the slightly obscure UK Tech House sound of the 90s which has come into serious demand in recent years. 100Hz's sound is simply integral in the sound of UK underground dance music.

Born in Heidelgerg from a German mother and a Marseillan father, young Merlino got the chance to live in London, Berlin and Mannheim where he discovered electronic musics (and how to party). He now lives in Marseille since a few years and the least we can say is that he adopted its sunny way of life: our boy got nicknamed Ricard'eau by the locals and the Velodrome stadium has no secrets for him. Passionate about digging, Merlino can play a long list of different styles but he has a slight kink for German 00s minimal, 90s house, electro... This podcast is a sweet dive into what Merlino has been digging recently, a fresh and sunny selection weaved with gracious skills on the 1200s. Co-founder of the Kinetik Toys crew that glows on Youtube with recently unearthed digs, he also runs parties in Marseille with precious and skilled guests, among them: Sibil, Jorge Escribano, DJ Tree, Ethan McNamara...
