raphael nascimento is @perrengue , dj and producer from aracaju, based in são paulo.

in brazilian portuguese, "perrengue" is an informal slang meaning a predicament with no easy escape, a somewhat difficult situation, hardship, trouble, inconvenience - and being a dj in the underground electronic scene in a third world country makes one not strange to some hurdles on the path, and as a way to reframe the negative sense of the word, raphael decided to embrace the name as a trophy of resilience in the face of so many struggles of being an independent artist trying to navigate the tricky business of being one in brazil.

hailing from the northeast, born in the smallest state of this continent-sized country, and based in sao paulo for the past 11 years, perrengue is well acquainted with both the extremes of the calm tediousness of his beach hometown and the chaotic restlessness of a gigantic landlocked megalopolis. from a family deeply connected to music, and since very young being around people engaged in the trade of producing events and performing, in the beginning of his own journey, he started producing small but deranged parties around the derelict sao paulo's downtown and after a while, he began playing some tracks in afterparties, and soon he became part of the line up of his own parties - as a way of saving money for his ultra low budget events for a while and then went on being a resident in some parties around the city, having played in most of the iconic dancefloors of the underground scene in são paulo.

he was one of the founding members of the infamous (and now defunct) collective Kriança Esperança, and later went to found the artist collective Quack (@quackcoletivo), which for the past years had gathered some following, promoting wild parties and occupying the streets with illegal events, a carnival block, and some showcases in festivals and parties in the city and elsewhere. perrengue has been playing in voodoohop parties since 2017, and is the producer and curator of “isso é muito voodoohop”, a weekly radio show at veneno.live with over 60 editions so far, bringing artists from all over the world to play some tunes every saturday night.

a psychedelia aficionado, perrengue’s style is of organized mess and thoughtful chaos, as he relies on mixing and layering many diverse elements, creating improvised mashups, adding ripped dialogues from movies or wierd youtube videos, gluing whatsapp audio messages from friends, sampling traditional percussion backing tracks to some unrelated styles of music, stretching, cutting, looping and wooving every deck available to form one cohesive (yet tangled up) sound. he loves bending genres, either by mixing things like techno with samba, playing some kitschy pop song from the 90s with some crazy syncopated downtempo kick loop and adding some unexpected track just to make the floor laugh while dancing in the most earnest fun possible.

vor dem Denkmahl. Wut kocht über, die Fackeln entzündend, feiern sie den kulturellen Verfall. Unverständnis für die Geschichte und Taten aus vergangenen Epochen, beginnt der Niedergang mit Hämmern und Klopfen. 
Einer stachelt den anderen auf, so nimmt das Unheil seinen Lauf. Aus Missfallen wird blinder Zerstörungswahn, im letzten Moment rette ich mich aus der Abschussbahn. 
Die Meute ist unwiederbringlich in ihrem Rausch. Das desaströse Ausmaß geht über diese eine Statur hinaus. Ehe man sich versieht, brennt schon das erste Haus. Der ganze Block in Flammen, wer hält diese Horde bloß auf?

IV-IN hat für dieses KataHaifisch-Wochenende einen Podcast der entspannten Art zubereitet. Die Percussion-Elemente erschaffen wie das Hufgetrappel aufgeschreckter Pferde eine treibende Atmosphäre. Gemeinsam steuern das Bläser- & Streicherensemble die angemessene Dosis Harmonie bei, während Piano & Vocals das Bindeglied in der Klangkette synthetisieren.

∞ Anicca // Mixes From The North Vol. 1 ∞

The Pali word "Anicca" means impermanence and it is one the three “marks” or basic characteristics of all phenomenal existence in Buddhism. It indicates that everything that is, is in constant change and nothing is permanent. Suffering in life arises when we cling in to something thinking it's for forever, denying the impermanent nature of all things.

Facing the impermanence in ourselves enables us to realise that we have no control over this phenomena of constant change and that any attempt to manipulate it creates suffering. With this insight we learn to develop detachment, an acceptance of Anicca, an openness to change, enabling us to live happily even if things don't always end up going the way we thought they would.

As one can hear, this mixtape is all about change and new beginnings, hardships of letting go and rediscovering something that got lost along the way. This piece of work is quite personal and definitely tells my story. Even though it's a bit melancholic at times, it's still full of hope and life. Just like me.

With these words of Dhamma, I wish you all the best, my brothers and sisters <3 :

“I had been in the business for quite some time already and pretty much thought that I had seen it all. All the tricks, all the gimmicks. There was nothing new anymore, no excitement. But it all changed that one night when I got to see her perform. Then I knew what real magic was.

She was a goddess sent from the heavens. Beautiful beyond words and that sparkle in her eyes was just something else. Or at least that how it felt at the time. Might have had something to do with the potions she was serving everyone just before the show. Her own mixture, she told us. Thinking back, I actually think that it was just a blend of high-grade acid and cheap grape juice. Nonetheless, it was delicious!

I can’t quite find words to describe what we who were there got to witness. It felt other-worldly. I think the best way for me to try to explain is to let you listen to this audio recording of the show that we found from Steve’s phone a few days later. He, like a lot of other people, had tried to video the whole thing but for some reason no-one’s cameras were working. Odd indeed, but as I told you already, she was really magic.

I must warn you though, this mix is like a siren song. You might find yourself coming back for this time after time after time. But who knows, it might just be the thing you need at the moment.”

And where may this door lead?

Fumes are crawling out from its crack and as you open it, you get pulled into a space that feels endless and yet confined. Your memories are crumbling — your thoughts evaporate into the steam around you.

The feeling of weightlessness can be overwhelming at first, even if you felt it a thousand times before. It's as if you're getting thrown off your feet and being held firmly at the same time. Up and down refrain from being established directions and become mere ideas.

You are part of a greater whole now. Will this last forever, or will you encapsulate into yourself again? Does it even matter? Those are questions you won't need the answer to just yet. So for now just keep on floating.
