This is my collection of 'B-Folk' - songs written in tribute, out of love and respect, and inspired by low/no/microbudget movies. They generally fall in the 'singer-songwriter' category but bounce around genres and styles depending on what strange things happened in my head while watching.

From songs about redneck zombies, people who love dead bodies, an alien jesus, killer mushrooms and everything in between, each one is meant to be an homage to the movie itself, drawing from the theme, the storyline, maybe a character's position or our position in the audience.

"No-Budget Nightmares" Songs

"I Am Here....Now" (with its four-point ellipses) is Neil Breen's 2009 sci-fi flick about the Earth's creator, descended from space, coming to observe and pass judgement on our planet.  Politicians, lawyers, corrupt businesses and evil people have not treated the world well, and he's going to contemplate whether he continues with the experiment...or ends it!

I dabbled in a 'bluesy' sound for this one.  Hope you like it!

NBN10: I Am Here....Now

The eleventh track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

"Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation" is a work of genius: a seven year project done by teenagers in the early 80s who simply wanted to do a shot for shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. ...simply? These 'kids' stayed true to the original, despite not having access to home video copies when they began. Their ages fluctuate throughout the film, but the passion to make this movie never did, not even decades later when they were funded by Kickstarter to shoot the one scene they were unable to do when they were younger. 

All the songs I write are homages to the filmmakers and their art despite being constrained by no budget, little experience and usually very little support.  This song is by far the one that is most dedicated to the filmmakers themselves, and even got it's own song title as a result...swanky!

NBN11: 'Sometimes A Boat Is As Good As A Plane' - Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation

"Truth or Dare?: A Critical Madness" is a 1986 flick that looks at the broken heart of a broken man...erm...well, it looks at a crazy dude who thinks people are daring him to do things like tear out his tongue or rip off his face. Oh...and he wears a bad ass copper mask too!

Normally I go the 'pretty folk' route. This time, I kind of went as crazy as our pal Mike, the main dude in the movie. Expect the unexpected, my friends!

"Tales of the Dead" is an anthology film with four stories and an overall concept of friends telling horror stories. So...this B-Folk song is four short songs with an overall concept: a nice folky bookend along with a showtuney piano piece, a softer sweet song, a dark acapella, and a pop-rock acoustic track. Five...five...five songs in one!

NBN13: Tales of the Dead

The fourteenth track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

"Combat Shock" is a flick that seems out of place in it's prolific parent catalogue. Known for gross out horror-comedies, Troma has made a name for itself thanks to The Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis Must Die, and...hundreds of other amazing low-budget films. Combat Shock is not a gross-out horror comedy...it's actually an incredibly deep, harsh and disturbing introspective film looking at life with PTSD. Sure, Troma puts it's stamp on the film, but you don't go into this movie thinking "Time for a fun night!" Or you do...and leave it thinking "...what is worse...war, or life after war?" 

By far the hardest film to write for. I didn't want to make light of the film (I never try to, I want to treat even the roughest film with respect) but I also didn't want to go too serious, so this song goes back to my roots: guitar, vocals, and hopefully something a bit pretty. Plus, after a series of full length multi layered songs, it was time for a simple 'Verse Chorus' mini-song like my earlier stuff for B-Folk!

NBN14: Combat Shock

The fifteenth track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

"Odd Noggins" is a...movie.  There's an alien abduction, which is actually a movie that everyone in the flick seems to have watched the night before, but might be real...I'm not sure. There's a lot of meta-conversations referring to what is happening in the film, what happens in other low-budget films as it is happening in this one at the same time, and a lot of random...random...random moments with characters that come and go as they please.  This is partly because the movie is made up of scenes filmed by actors and filmmakers across the US who the films auteur, Joe Sherlock, had wanted to work with but couldn't because of geographic distance.

Because the movie kept being meta, and because the movie kept referring to that opening 'abduction' scene...this song is pretty much following the same format: opens with the abduction, and refers back throughout. 

...yes...I'm so clever.

NBN15: Odd Noggins

The sixteenth track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

"Catholic Ghoulgirls" is a film that caused a lot of strife on No-Budget Nightmares. On one hand, Moe found the movie entertaining and fun. Doug...not so much. Since I like everything, clearly I enjoyed the story of a small town overrun (?) by Zombies (?) and the main characters (?) as girls in Catholic School...that one doesn't need a question mark. There are loads of 80s references, ridiculous moments and indescribable interactions with the walking dead.

I've been listening to a lot of early 90s ballads, and had Aaron Neville stuck in my head, so...as you can hear...he made his way into the song.

I consider this a 'Demo.'  I want to do a full mix with cheesy synth, guitar solos and maybe a second vocalist when I find the time!

NBN17: Violent Shit

The eighteenth track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

In the 1980s the most dangerous and taboo films a person could desperately try to find was a series of Japanese horror films called Guinea Pig, depicting a group of men torturing a woman. They passed themselves off as 'found footage' before found footage was a thing. The grainy nature of the footage was disturbing. Since then, DVDs have been released...as well as documentaries showing how the special effects were achieved. Also, it's pretty obvious while watching that it was a movie. A fu**ed up movie, but a movie nonetheless.

The guys at No-Budget Nightmares chose Guinea Pig as their latest film to review...as such, I was tasked with writing a song about the classic. And, for some reason, the sensitive rock of the early 90s became my inspiration.

NBN18: Guinea Pig

The nineteenth track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

2003's 'I Dream Of Dracula' is a shot-on-video, low-budget vampire film that you can find on the 'Bloody Nightmares' boxed set...an endless treasure trove of movies that look like they were edited with two VCRs and several bottles of scotch. IDoD is a horror-comedy that has very few scares and mostly unintentional laughs and (unlike my friends on No-Budget Nightmares) I enjoyed it thoroughly. 

Basic plot: a girl dreams about vampires, concludes it may be memories from a past life, as her husband and friend try to coax her to act more and more insane so they can institutionalize her, thus getting at her sweet, sweet inheritance money...I think. Either that, or it's about a girl who is descended from vampires coming of age, needing a sacrifice to complete the transformation.

There are dreams. But no Dracula.

For some reason, I opted to play my accordion and spent an hour trying to find my plastic public school recorder to complete this track.

NBN19: I Dream Of Dracula

The twentieth track in the 'No-Budget Nightmares' b-folk series, where I write a song for one of the flicks the NBN crew is reviewing on their podcast!

New but already a classic, 2013's 'HI-8' (short for Horror Independent 8) is an awesome anthology flick bringing together eight of low-budget horror's most prolific and revered directors: Ron Bonk, Donald Farmer, Marcus Koch, Tony Masiello, Tim Ritter, Chris Seaver, Todd Sheets and Brad Sykes. 

As an homage to this crazy collective, this song looks at their crazy body of work - as well as some of the actors and writers involved in the movie - and crams as much as I can into a two minute song. Big ups to Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, R.E.M. and Billy Joel for the inspiration...mostly Dylan.

I consider this version a 1.0...I wanted to get the song to the guys for the podcast release, and intend to at least get a better mix put together...if not a re-do of vocals. This is a hard song to sing!!

What rhymes with 'balsamic vinegar'? And what kind of movie is balsamic vinegar so important to the plot that it needs to be included in an homage? THIS ONE! 

Fungicide (2005) is Dave Wascavage's (Suburban Sasquatch) horror-comedy about a mad scientist...erm, hobbyist!...who accidentally calls forth an army of killer mushrooms. Luckily for humanity, the right balance of professional wrestler, land developer and military-turned-reality star are staying at a very curious-but-rude woman's Bed and Breakfast! They'll save the day!

This track may be my most ambitious yet...but please remember, my ambition is to write pretty songs about low-budget films. Two acoustic guitars, bass and accordion along with four tracks of vocals. I love studio noise, so I left the 'end of the song' at the end...just imagine I've finished playing all the instruments - at once - and am sitting down after a gruelling multi-armed session.

This one was really hard to write for...mainly because it's really...REALLY good. I've found the best songs come from the weirdest, lowest-quality, messed up flicks with a couple of exceptions.

A little glimpse into my brain: I don't know what kind of song is going to come out of my odd noggin until I've watched the movie. I was 'hoping' this song would come out more 'metal' to pay an additional layer of tribute to the film's director - the inimitable and amazing godfather of low-budget horror, Todd Sheets - but instead...he got a lyric-heavy bossa nova track.

House of Forbidden Secrets (2014) is the first movie I've been able to write a song for before it has a release outside of film festivals on DVD or online. I got to watch a private screener. That was dope. Additionally, I actually received comments from Sheets himself after my take on Hi-8, an anthology film for which he filmed a segment. So...pressure...pressure was on.

I don't think I've crammed this many lyrics into a song since Kindergarten Ninja, and I've never done it with such care for what the words mean. I mean, KN was a fun story-telling exercise. House of Forbidden Secrets was a challenge in boiling down what I saw as an underlying theme, drawing from some key moments in the flick, and still trying to keep it relevant to the movie without sounding like some kind of awkward poem.

Despite coming out as a 'pretty song' when I was hoping for 'balls to the wall fuckin rock song' I'm still pretty proud of this one! Hope you guys like it...and I hope Todd Sheets still has a shred of respect for me after this ;)

How do you write a song about one of the most revered, well-known and beloved low-budget zombie flicks of all time? You write a hymn, of course!

The Dead Next Door (1989) is a perfect example of how much you can do with a great idea, creativity...and an impressive number of zombie-painted extras! Putting the connections to horror gods Raimi, Spiegel and Campbell aside, this movie is a comedic-horror work of art with scenes you could never get away with today...zombies climbing the fence around the White House? Seriously?

This song gets it's inspiration from the cultish church in the flick, who have great adoration for the zombies and seem to consider them sent from God himself. They want to support the zombies in their efforts to eat human flesh, so I figured they deserved a hymn to sing too!

A must watch for all horror fans!!

NBN23: The Dead Next Door

The goal: pay homage to a film that likely doesn't get the respect it deserves, so I treat every movie regardless of subject matter, acting or directing skill, writing or...well, quality...as the amazing creative genius that it is!

Or in this case...write a song despite the film.

The first song in the entire series that I wrote...let's say, more to help poor Doug and Moe get through a tough time than to honour the film. I'm not even gonna waste too much time on this one, but let's just say that there's Portuguese lyrics in the song that translate roughly to 'Fuck this film and everything it stands for.'

NBN24: Women's Studies

Return of the Ghostbusters (2007) is the ultimate fan-film! Filling the void for Ghostbusters fanatics decades after the release of the first film, these guys made the flick for around $3,500 but it looks like...a LOT more than $3,500! It's got a lot of heart and passion, and is definitely worth the watch!

NBN25: Return Of The Ghostbusters

Things (1989) is a Canadian low-budget classic, and is about as Canadian as you can get. Straight outta Scarberia, the abouts are 'aboot' and the hockey hair is 'oot!' Hilarious, gory and vomitrocious, this flick doesn't make much sense but it's fookin fun to watch, eh???

NBN26 - Things

The goal: pay homage to a film that likely doesn't get the respect it deserves, so I treat every movie regardless of subject matter, acting or directing skill, writing or...well, quality...as the amazing creative genius that it is!

Killer Klowns from Kansas on Krack (2003) now sits among the few B-Folk titles that are impossible to make sound pretty with a pretty song. They put this one on Front Street: the movie is about a pair (trio?) of rodeo clowns...one being a puppet...and a fourth being a giant chicken...who are fired from their job for smoking pot, warned about the dangers of crack, and smoke it anyway, making them killers. Oh, they're from Kansas. Add to that a religious cult, a witch-nosed US Marshall from Utah, some puppet crack dealers, and a variety of victims and you have the movie! With long silent sequences, a half-animated gun fight, and a few truly disgusting sequences and you have yourself a low-budget movie!

NBN27 - Killer Klowns From Kansas On Krack

Sweetly pretty stripped down, accordion and voice-only song written in tribute to a low-budget slasher flick about a fraternity!

Hauntedween is a beautiful low-budget mashup of traditional slasher, 80s college movie and horror-comedies like Sleepaway Camp 2. A killer returns to the scene of the crime twenty years later to dispatch a bunch of college kids using his old home as a haunted house to make the three thousand dollars they need to keep their fraternity up to date with their back dues...SHEESH! Amazing (bad) acting, amazing (bad) music and ridiculous gore make it a MUST see...plus, the random Nicolas Cage-like buff 80s dude (as seen in the image)

**By my count, this song is FOUR DIRECTOR APPROVED (The lovely Claire 'Fluff' Llewellyn shared it on the 'Hobo...' FB page, and Tonjia Atomic, Mark Charles Adams and Christopher Kahler also gave a thumbs up...and with Chris Kahler's sweet, sweet approval, he also doubles as HOBO APPROVED! Now...if I can lure Lloyd Emmons, Kyle Leonard and Steven Grainger I'll have all directors who are represented in the song...GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL!**

A 'not yet released' (as of November 2015) Anthology film tied together by a homeless man who is telepathically linked to objects associated with the story...one touch and he's shown the final moments in the history of a frying pan, paper bag, apple...you get the gist. Some great moments...some not so great moments...but deserving of a song nonetheless!
