"Requiem In The Mountains" - Single

It was a calm, overcast day, and I found myself resting at the side of a large oak tree, admiring the beauty of the woods that surrounded me with pleasing waterfall.The waterfall was Mediterranean-blue and magical. It was swishing over the rocks joyfully. It was thundering down into the pool like a gigantic water spout. When it toppled into the ecstasy-pool, it foamed it at the bottom. The rest of the pool was as clear as cellophane, enabling me to see down into the rocky bottom. Fronds of forest-green plants waved gently in the depths. The waterfall looked like a sheet of blue velour as it swished down. Its edges were hemmed with whipped white lines.
We could see a gaggle of geese grazing by the bank and the scene was picture perfect. A group of Amazonian ferns edged with saw’s teeth and statue still, added a tropical flavour.I stood under the waterfall to cool down, but it was catacomb cold.It gave me goose bumps immediately.
There was a gentle breeze, creating the single sound of rustling leaves. The leaves appeared as though they were dying to fall out of the tree and join their companions on the forest floor. Together with pine needles and other flora the leaves formed a thick springy carpet for me to walk upon.The forest was pure and clean, as though it had never been disturbed by man and his vicious life killing machines. Peacefully sleeping under the dark gray sky, the community of mighty timber had not a care in the world.
 I ended up quivering and shivering on the bank. The nectar sweet smell of the spring flowers perked up my spirit.Then I had a cup of chocolate and it was Godlike after my moment of madness.

INSPIRATION:

Can I give you a quick glimpse into the whirlwind mind of an independent musician?

It’s all about seasons. Last summer and into the fall, I was furiously writing a new Elskavon album, not to mention new Bora York songs with my wife, and Hi-Fi Cali collaborations and singles… For every album I release, which is typically around 9-10 songs, I end up with sometimes more than 50 demos and half-written songs. So there was a lot of writing happening. The ideas kept coming and the inspiration was heavy.

In September, I decided to set a release date for the new album, Skylight - this gives myself a deadline to actually call things done, and to get prepped for a release. From late fall on, leading up to that date (January 26), I was finishing songs, mixing and mastering the audio, working on artwork, studio and promo videos, show prep, social media content, reaching out for press and playlist possibilities, and more. There’s a lot of things on the independent release checklist.

In the midst of all this, I was about to step into a part-time freelance role, something my wife and I had been preparing for about a year. We’re very hopeful and excited about this season of our journey, which just started a few weeks ago. 

There has been a lot of things happening, and I’m grateful every step of the way. But I’m human and I get burnt out, as well. Last week it was tough to find any sort of inspiration whatsoever. And there was a definite setback regarding the new album - something I had been getting used to slipped away. It’s part of the process, and something I was fully aware could be a possibility. But it was still a bit of a punch in the gut.

Rhian Sheehan is an award-winning music producer and screen composer from New Zealand. Known for his fusion of atmospheric-post-rock with electronic and chamber music, he has released 6 albums and 2 EP’s on Loop Recordings (NZ/Aus), Darla (US), Preco (Japan). His 2013 release Stories From Elsewhere has received much praise; renowned US reviewer John Diliberto (Echoes) calling it “a modern ambient chamber music masterpiece of quietly epic dimensions". His 2018 album, A Quiet Divide, is his most orchestral album to date, merging chamber strings & piano, with emotionally charged cinematic post-rock atmospheres. Releasing the album alongside a 6 date audiovisual live tour around New Zealand, the album reached no.2 on the NZ Top 20.

His work as a screen composer is diverse, actively writing scores for a wide variety of film, television, documentary, advertising, multi-media exhibits, and 360o Fulldome Planetarium dome show projects around the world, having worked on projects featuring luminaries Andy Serkis, David Tennant, Tim Allen, Martin Scorsese, Rupert Grint, and Jared Leto.  He has written music featured on many notable TV shows and channels, including Top Gear (UK), the hit HBO series Silicon Valley, BBC Horizon, CNN, National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Netflix, America's Got Talent, and has written music featured during The US Super Bowl, and The Academy Awards.
Sheehan has composed music for various multimedia installations and exhibits around the world, including UK's National Space Centre, The Kennedy Space Center, London’s Natural History Museum, Ferrari World, World of WearableArt, and Weta Workshop. His score for the 12-part prime-time series The Cult won him a Qantas Film & TV Award (Best original music in a TV series), and he also wrote the score for the Emmy Award winning series Reservoir Hill. Sheehan’s music was used extensively during NBC’s prime-time coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, and he has written music featured in a variety of commercials, including spots for Google, Nike, GoPro, American Express, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Facebook. He has written for Hans Zimmer's custom music company Bleeding Fingers and Extreme Music. Sheehan has scored music for the acclaimed films Belief: The possession of Janet Moses and Stray, and more recently scored the mixed-reality AR steampunk inspired robot shooting game, Dr. Grordbort Invaders, produced by Magic Leap & Weta Workshop (Peter Jackson & Richard Taylor's award-winning special effects and prop company).
He has written scores for numerous UK and US produced 360o Fulldome 3D Planetarium shows, most notably, We Are Astronomers, We Are Aliens, We Are Stars (for which he was awarded Best Original Score at the Fiske Planetarium Awards), and Back To The Moon For Good, which was produced by Google XPRIZE, the UK National Space Centre, and Robert K. Weiss (producer of The Blues Brothers). Narrated by Tim Allen (Toy Story), Back To The Moon For Good is one of the most popular and watched Planetarium Dome shows ever made; having screened in over 450 Planetariums around the world.
