Up The Stuss Radio 19 by S.A.M.

In the far north of Colombia, all the way along the Caribbean coast, you can find one of the world's best hostels called El Rio. This magnificent place is co-run by Ben Davies who left the north of the UK a decade ago in search of sun, snakes and waterfalls.

One element that makes El Rio special is that, since its inception, underground clubbing and electronic music have been central to the project. This manifests as endless club nights, riverside sunrises (and mornings), and the groundbreaking Bonanza festival, a happening that brings together the very best of Colombian, South American and global underground electronic dance music acts, all co-curated by Ben and Adi    

Ben Davies also deejays under the name Benny. His UK roots are never far away, which is something you will hear in this brand new Basic Moves mix, recorded live on Sunday evening of this year’s edition of Bonanza. I was on the dancefloor the whole time and when, a couple of months ago, Benny told me the set was recorded, it was a no-brainer to put it out on the Basic Moves platform.

Snakes, waterfalls and a lot of techno, breaks, trance and acidic goodies … just how we like it … give it up for Benny!

Rush Hour x VF Live 05: Ruutu Poiss & Orpheu The Wizard (May 2024)

For the next instalment of our Record Club Mix series we head to Paris, with a brilliant mix from Matthieu Biron aka Matt Ma Moustache. 

Born in Brittany, Matt also originates from Martinique (West Indies), which has had massive influence on his musical tastes. A respected digger and DJ, his love of disco, modern soul, funk, gospel, Afro and West Indian grooves has seen him support the likes of Antal, Mendel, Esa, Gino Grasso, Louise Chen and The Mighty Zaf. Back in 2018, Matt also co-founded one of Paris’ top listening bars @frequencebarparis, a vinyl only cocktail bar highlighting some of the best diggers and DJs from around the world. 

“In this mixtape I really wanted to play what I enjoy the best and what we play the most often at Frequence. The tempo is going up song after song to catch the audience in an uplifting atmosphere and make them dance. Different music styles are showcased here : Disco, Boogie, African and Gospel. 

First, three beautiful gospel records set the tone as I love to start with that style or zouk. Following there’s a record with a great cover of Candy Bowman ‘Since  I Found You’ by Crossroads. After that, two magic Disco records that became classic at Frequence over the course of years (almost 7 now): Thunderstorm - Summer Love and Jean Carn - Super Explosion. The superb song to finish from Joe and Lee - ‘Black Gold Disco Moving Machine’ hits with a lot of energy; this one should become a classic dancefloor track in my opinion. 

I always try and play different styles wherever I am, to catch as many people in the audience as possible. This sort of became my trademark if I may say. The mix is 100% vinyl, all from my personal collection that I’ve dug around the world. It was recorded on two Technics and a DJR 200 (during a rainy day ^^).”

Big thanks to Matt for the mix - he will be playing in Canada in a few weeks time and for the first time in Brazil in 2025.

Mark Hill's dramatic influence on the scene is hard to overstate. A founding member of Artful Dodger, who dominated the turn of the millennium with their cross-over garage sound, including a string of hits featuring soon to be superstar Craig David.  
With more flavour than ever, Hill returns at full force with prodigious vocalist Nat Slater. The 18 year old co-wrote the neo-garage motif "Happy Without Me" and has a connection with Hill that stretches back to before she was born. 
 The 2000 album "It's All About The Stragglers" contained a very special single "Outrageous" which featured the vocals of Lynn Eden. By the time of the photo shoot for the CD single Lynn was incidentally carrying the unborn Slater, not knowing her daughter would grow up to collaborate with Mark Hill on a project as special as this. 
 "Happy Without Me" conglomerates a heartfelt modern R&B vocal performance with Hill's dynamic and atmospheric production. It contains a rhythm and distinction that only comes from the UK and a quality that echoes through the generations.
