On the 13th April, people in South Africa were stunned. On the evening news the sight of six police force members brutally beating a man, Andries Tatane, to death was aired. The images of the police smashing his body with batons and repeatedly firing rubber bullets into his chest struck a cord; people were simply shocked and appalled. Literally hundreds of articles followed in the press, politicians of all stripes also hopped on the bandwagon and said they lamented his death; and most called for the police to receive appropriate training to deal with ‘crowd control’ – after all, elections are a month away.

As a tribute to South Africa’s Heritage month, 50 Shades of Brown is a song that strives to celebrate the diversity, beauty and colorfulness of all Southern Africans, specifically the Coloured people of Southern Africa. The Coloured community of Southern Africa has roots that stems from almost all of the nations and tribes of the world; their gene pool contains DNA strains from Indigenous African Tribes, India, Native America, Asia, Europe, Madagascar and many other places. As a result of this hybrid genetics, the Coloured people have extremely unique ways of doing things; from their food, dress, language, physical attributes and more is all interestingly unique. This uniqueness, when compared to other African tribes, the notion is always brought-up that Coloureds do not have a heritage or a culture but this notion could not be further from the truth!

50 Shades of brown tells the listener that you are beautifull and unique and that your uniqueness should be celebrated, regardless of your skin texture or shade.

Recorded in Sept/Oct of 2018 in South Tel Aviv, as part of the #LowRes research I undertook through Art Cube studios in Jerusalem, it is part of a long term project on the #Lemba nation of Southern Afrika, sometimes referred to as the black jews.
