'Resonance' is a profound and alluring work by Australian composer Sally Greenaway and lyricist Kirsten Duncan. 

Featuring the exquisite voices of Canberra’s Luminescence Chamber Singers conducted by Roland Peelman AM, the piece envelops us in the resounding beauty of the human voice.

The text and music explores the timeless, transformative and unifying power of song, of self-discovery and connection with others: 

A note so intimate
It carries us into the unknown.
A spark, the embers combining,
Nurturing the passion to sing.
Voices surrounding,
Notes string into melody…

"My poem describes the individual emotional journey, the physiological process and the broader societal impacts of discovering group singing" says lyricist Kirsten Duncan. "It becomes something magical, a unified whole, a beautiful creation."

"I watched my original poem transform into a beautiful piece of music. Sally told me that this was one of the best pieces she had ever written." 

Choral music has a unique power to touch something very deep inside us – whether it’s classical music, church music or folk music.  Millions of people around the globe sing in amateur and community choirs, even continuing to sing together during the pandemic by linking up online. This extraordinary sense of community – of belonging, of being greater than the sum of your parts – that you experience when you join in song with other people has proven benefits to our physical and mental wellbeing. 

This philosophy goes to the heart of choral ensemble The Resonants, directed by Helen Swan, who commissioned "Resonance" in 2015 to celebrate their 25th anniversary and contribute a locally-produced choral piece for the wider repertoire for talented choirs around the globe.

Introduc􀀛tion, Nocturne and Aubade (Stravinsky Sketches) is based on
several themes from Stravinsky's works. These consist of the famous
chord from the "Augurs of Spring" sec􀀛on of “The Rite of Spring” which
is heard at the outset, part of the theme from the “Sonata for Two
Pianos” and, similarly, that from the third “Etude for Piano” Op.7. There
are also various references to other works by Stravinsky.

This work, written by Katy Abbott, was made possible through the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s 50 Fanfares Project and was commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, supported by Geoff Stearn.

Fanfare for the Melancholy is a ‘sister-work’ of Katy Abbott’s fanfare Punch (2013)

The title comes from the idea that a fanfare is sometimes heralding a call to action, or an invitation to listen or the arrival or celebration of someone or something meaningful to the audience.  In this case, it is an acknowledgment of ‘melancholy’ – definitely not as a ‘negative’ feeling but as an acknowledgement of yearning and bitter-sweet.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have used astronomy in their culture for thousands of years.
The stars are used for navigation, timekeeping, food gathering, and represent the homes of ancestors, animals, plants, and spirits.
The Emu in the Sky is seen near the Southern Cross constellation and it's body is made up of the dark patches of sky between the stars.
It is common between many Aborigial language groups and highlights connections between sky and land, between living things and the environment.
In this piece I wish to portray the beauty of the night sky, and contemplate and respect the vast knowledge and culture of Aboriginal people which encompasses our country.

I've been noodling around with singing pop songs recently - something I hadn't really done for at least a decade! It's not what I've been trained to do, but I do love it. Second day working on this and I've made some improvements on yesterday :)
