Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards. The artist also references religious and historical figures, such as Jezebel, to illustrate the consequences of straying from one's own principles and values.
The second verse is directed at men, criticizing those who prioritize material possessions and status over their responsibilities and relationships. Hill calls out toxic behaviors such as domestic violence and irresponsible fatherhood, and questions how these men can hope to succeed in life if they are not right on the inside. The song ends with a dialogue that reflects on the difference between love and being in love, suggesting that true love goes beyond the surface and accepts a person as they are. After winning her title, Clifford worked as an actress, playing minor roles in films such as The Boston Strangler with Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda, Coogan's Bluff with Clint Eastwood and Sweet Charity with Shirley MacLaine. So its been a while since I've uploaded any music on here. I have a new original track with a vocalist I am currently working on and will be coming out soon hopefully on a very cool label. In the meantime here is a lovely new edit I have created of a classic Basement Jaxx track originally released on  there Rooty album back in 2001. I've put a Disco spin on this one, something nice and funky. You can expect lots of Disco vibes with my new tracks. Its a big change from what I was making before but Disco music is what I have loved since I was a kid and it has always been my favourite genre. I hope you like it. Chuggin Edits is back with a seriously catchy re-edit, familiar to many from the sub sub track ‘Ain’t no Use’ it’s recently picked up by Craig Charles and has been used as the intro to his Funk & Soul show on BBC 6 music.
The Sub Sub track itself used a sample from a 1979 Disco track Good Morning Starshine which itself was a cover of the iconic 60's track from the stage production of Hair and originally sung by Jill O’Hara and the company, it was also a US top 10  hit by solo artist Oliver, listen to the tracks and you’d never guess they are going to influence a new edit in 2020 no less a dance hit of the 1990s.
So back to 1979 towards the end of Disco’s peak New York producer Walter Schatz put together a four-track album called Disco Spectacular, inspired by the movie version of Hair and featuring a singer who started out with a six week run on the broadway production Vickie Sue Robinson, famed for 1976 grammy nominated song Turn the Beat Around, Vickie was heard singing in a studio by Walter and rightly believing she had a voice suited to disco, they went on to produce music together off and on until the mid-eighties.
