Edvard Grieg is quickly becoming one of my favorite “go-to” composers for character pieces. He wrote with such clarity that you definitely get the point, even if it is occasionally a little heavy handed.

Still, this is a great “downer” piece before you play that barn-burner to finish things up.

This was my first commissioned piece by the "Air City Wind Quintet." This is a live performance at the University of Louisville by Carrie Ellis, Flute; Alex Enyart, Clarinet; Jackie Royce, Bassoon; Scott Sams, Oboe; and myself, horn. 

Here are the notes from the score:
"I've found the association of color with different moods of music to be quite strong - not only for myself, but for others as well. Through these movements, I have assigned titles that very generally reflect the color sensations they may evoke. Aside from ideas of color, this piece explores a variety of emotions ranging from youthful whim, elation, wit, and humor to despair and woe. 
The wind quintet, with five unique and distinct instruments, offers a myriad of color and timbres making it the perfect medium for this idea."
