The next release from the re-activated Frank & Tony drops on Scissor and Thread. Following on from Dream Vibration - which broke a five year hiatus from the much-lauded production pair of Francis Harris and Anthony Collins - Eastern Meantimes brings us a sublime set of tracks and remixes. 

The original features New York artist Eliana Glass, whose sultry vocals ride above a deep, atmospheric groove and lush pads and washes. 

The track is also presented here with two stellar remixes from Timmy Regsiford, the New York legend who has been defining the sound of house in the city for nearly 40 years. 

Here his vocal and instrumental remixes are smooth, deep and infectious, sure to light up discerning dance- floors the world over. 
Frank & Tony’s Absence is the other original track here, a thick, pulsing bass-driven roller punctuated with sharp snares and the pair’s trademark ethereal pads. 

There’s also a digi exclusive where Regisford teams up with DSOL for a ‘retouch’ of Eastern Melodies - giving the track another flavor, rich in additional percussion and a slightly heavier groove.

Following the success of their EPs released last year on Scissor and Thread, Frank & Tony return with another outing of deeper than deep house with a three track EP including an expansive collaborative exploration with Comatonse recording artist Will Long. 

The title track, Understanding takes a nod to 90s Chicago deep house with a slow rolling groove set against plush pads and euphoric stabs sure to send dancefloors swirling in the earliest of nights and mornings alike. 

We Begin, a dreamy trip of emotive soundscapes, kicks things up a notch with jazzy undertones but a drive meant for peak times as it unfolds in moods and grooves for ages. 

The EP then culminates with a vast rework of the same track in collaboration with Comatonse artist and DJ Sprinkles collaborator, Will Long, pushing the EP to psychedelic lengths as the essence of what we call a house groove reaches new idiosyncratic heights.  Essential.

Will Long is an American artist. He curates and manages the label Two Acorns, as well as producing music since 2005, in various forms under his own name for Terre Thaemiltz's Comatonse Recordings, and as Celer for his own label and many others. 

Here he joins the perfectly aligned Scissor and Thread label of Francis Harris and Anthony Collins for the Too Much EP. 

"Too Much" is a deep cut from the same grooves as the Long Trax series," says Will Long, "a further entry for the downtrodden, the overwhelmed, and those that think change has come. A midnight meditation of intentional simplicity, strained, and on that night train."

The title track is lush, loose deep jam that combines wistful, warm pads with an insistent groove and choice samples.  

Francis Harris steps up to provide one of his signature reforms, adding a little more percussion and drive to the track, while DJ Aakmael (Greg Stewart) offers up another version that takes the track somehow even deeper, adding some additional instrumentation and raw sounds.

For someone who wasn't born there, Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann might be the most Detroit guy to ever exist.  Moving to the motor city from LA at only three weeks old, he has never "truly" left since. His music channels the musical legacy of Black Detroit – transplanted Delta blues, gospel, Motown and Fortune, Stevie Wonder, the Electrifying Mojo and the Belleville Three – with an unassailable verve. His dust-spackled opus "Silentintroduction" has hummed continously in the background of house music since its release in 1997, inspiring generations of producers.

As we launch into the 20th instalment of our Watergate Mix series, it seems only fitting that we turn to one of our own artists to commemorate the milestone. A man already well known for his poignant and impassioned productions and DJ sets, we are thrilled to present Matthias Meyer as the next master of controls on Watergate 20! 

Over the course of 80 minutes, Meyer skillfully navigates through boundless sonic spaces of lush melodics, organic grooves and sentimental sensations with an effortless approach. From the very beginning, emotions run deep as the sound of rain and strings on Kettenkarussell's 'Ten Friends' sets the stage as YokoO & Retza's exclusive track 'Satori' and Leafar Legov's 'Tribal Girls' establish the percussive tone of the mix. The journey really begins to unfold when back to back exclusive tracks; Gorje Hewek & Izhevski's 'Turgoyakk' and Matthias' own 'Uluwatu' take over. As the mix picks up steam tracks from Palms Trax, Langenberg, Hyenah and another exclusive from Meyer himself provide the perfect momentum that drives us into the deeper side as the mix takes a turn towards the final stretch. The alluring sounds of Marco Resmann's 'Fluid Of Life' and Innervisions' Orchestral mix of Underworld's 'Crocodile' set the stage for a stunning farewell as Patlac's remix of Matthias' 'Ostinato' and Traumprinz' twist on Efdemin's 'Parallaxis' bid us adieu in a manner reminiscent of a 'Northern Exposure' mix from masters like Sasha and Digweed. 

From start to finish, Meyer displays his sound and range with a masters touch, demonstrating exactly the reason for his highly in demand status.

The hugely successful partnership between Dennis Ferrer and Defected has a remarkable and prolific history. Some of Defected’s largest crossover hits have been delivered courtesy of Dennis’ incredibly intuitive production skills and when the two names are associated, the music is guaranteed to be ground-breaking. I have always been a sucker for good songs and when amazing tunes like this drop into my inbox i feel like i have been the goodies on a silver platter.
On "Dance Pain" everything just sounds on point from beats, arrangement, arps and chords to the awesome vocal work done by JAW aka Nathan Daisy.
Rashid undoubtedly has a special flair for creating these hypnotic deephouse tunes.
I guess this is the follow up to "Night Prayer" from 2015. It definitely is just as good as that track and what a perfect opener for this Dark Stars 003 release.
Love at first listen for me and signed right away.

Frank & Aakmael - Mercy Of Means 

Next up on Francis Harris’ (@cfrancisharris) exceptional imprint Scissor & Thread comes a collaboration with American Producer, DJ Aakmael (@dj-aakmael). Aakmael has built a reputation for some of the deepest, rawest house music sounds coming out of the States, releasing well-received tracks on the likes of Freerange Records, Axe On Wax, Kolour, Dogmatik and Unxpozd.

Returning to Scissor & Thread, Aakmael and label boss Harris cook up an intoxicating vibe across this 5 track EP. Each shares a track and work together on the fifth, while also remixing each other's solo cuts.

First up Aakmael’s Deep Muzik- a quintessential nod to its self-proclaimed mission statement. Skittering drums, a shuffling groove, deep keys, and chords make up this essential opener.

Frank’s (aka Francis Harris) All That Light Mix shows another side, finding pockets of space and developing the fizzing percussion to produce an equally affecting piece of dancefloor bliss.

Sharing production duties from the outset on Mercy of Means, the guys slip into an easy mid-tempo groove with plenty of depth - the rhythm rolls along and offers the perfect basis for some sublime melodic touches.

Frank’s Part Song also hones in on the subtle deep grooves. Bumping, slightly filtered and saturated drums provide the main body, with beautiful washes and keys finding their way through.

Aakmael’s remix beefs up the groove somewhat, making the snares snap harder and kick hit a little stronger, but the essence of the tracks melodic atmosphere remains perfectly in place.

Hidden Spheres is the alter ego of Manchester’s Tom Harris, who first made his mark on the underground circuit with his release 'The Bloos' on Moods & Grooves, before following it up with the much in demand ‘Waiting’ on Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii.  

Here, Tom joins the Scissor & Thread family, the Brooklyn label founded by Francis Harris, and home to music that traverses a number of boundaries. Hidden Spheres fits right in - the five track 1985 EP blends house, broken beat, ambient, jazz and other elements into a heady brew. 

'King Tut' starts proceedings, a laid back jazzy groove, rich in textures and soulful flourishes.  

'My Names' touches on the UK broken beat legacy of 4 Hero and Bugz in the Attic - an off kilter groove layered with sweet jazz and house inflected licks.  

'Karl' is a much more direct dancefloor track, albeit with the deepness that we expect from Hidden Spheres.The penultimate track '1985' steps into the unconventional house vibes of Detroit's third wave.

'Soon We’ll' finishes up the EP - a supremely jazzy piece built around the sax, piano and washes of strings and ambient elements - a superb closer for a deep and heartfelt release.

ON THEIR RETURN TO DESOLAT BARCELONA BASED MUSICIANS PULSHAR DELIVER A DELICIOUSLY DEEP AND TRIPPY EP

Following on from 2010’s critically acclaimed album ‘Inside’, Spanish duo Sergio Vidal and Pablo Bolívar aka Pulshar return to Desolat with the ‘Different Drum EP’, and all four tracks showcase the deeply hypnotic yet richly soulful sounds which the duo are synonymous with.

Opener ‘Wasting Time’ is a collaboration with Desolat label head Loco Dice. The track, which was creating during a jam session between these friends, is a deep and twisted journey, with ocean-deep sub-bass, and features Loco Dice’s own distorted vocals which echo in and out of the music.

On ‘So Tired’, Pulshar have expertly crafted a captivating rich soundscape packed full of warm textures and atmospheres. ‘Different Drum’ is a similarly engaging and uplifting track complete with soaring synths and crisp drums.

The 12” is rounded up by the standout ‘She’s Got A Ticket’, with its infectious groove, rich sounds and contagious vocal layered over its psychedelic rhythm.

On ‘Different Drum’ Pulshar have demonstrated with aplomb why over the last few years their distinctive and soulful brand of psychedelic electronic music has been turning heads and moving dancefloors.

Villete aka Amsterdam based producer Anne Korteweg returns to Scissor and Thread with a brilliant new EP.

Her debut 12" 'Girl Next Door' was released on Scissor and Thread in the fall of 2016 and sold out quickly.

Now here with the new EP Dawn is Mine, we are treated to seven tracks of understated, floating beauty.

On her new release she explores the more abstract sides of electronic music. Using a variety of synthesizers, she creates rich and lush sounding structures that continuously bend and flow loosely. She finds inspiration from listening to Pauline Anna Strom, Takashi Kokubo and Actress.

Opener Penrose Stairs sets the tone with gentle arpeggiated synths creating a warm, fuzzy atmosphere - a combination further explored in Midnight Arp later into the mini-album.

The title track Dawn Is Mine uncovers a low bass throb mixed with dubbed out effects and textures, while Lilac emits an ethereal, woozy atmosphere, with lush pads, choral textures and blissful melodic motifs.

Myst also luxuriates in hazy pads before a slo-mo groove emerges to carry the track towards the edge of the dance floor. If Myst flirts with the idea of dancing, Show Me dives right in - an exquisite slice of deep, outsider house with a psychedelic twist.

Winding the release down with Wild Things - a beat-less vignette of synths engaged in an melodic interplay of chimes and tones.

Nadia Khan returns on Scissor and Thread for another sublime mini LP, Port Ana. Based in North Carolina, Khan first drew a lot of attention via a cassette release on Where To Now? Records in 2015.

Her sophomore statement was the beautiful In Gleam released in 2018 on Francis Harris’ Brooklyn-based label, which set the tone for these five tracks of meditative music.
