"Every Day I Escape You" is my first music release in ten years as a singer-songwriter, independent artist. Written during the COVID-19 lockdown as my small business neared collapse and my mental health and relationships were unraveling. 

The song says what I couldn’t say, when I needed to say it. The lyrics capture the emotional turmoil and the relentless cycle I felt starting over each day. My heartfelt apologies and expressions of adoration reflect complex relationship dynamics that I believe many of us experience.

Every Day I Escape You

Inspired by a “real” frozen princess, high altitudes and past lives, singer-songwriter and independent artist Scott Zuniga presents his new single Mountain Girl.

I was lost in Peru when I learned about the ancient Incan princess Juanita, whose body remained frozen in the ice-capped Andes for centuries until hikers discovered her. 

Seeing her was a solemn moment—a connection across time between the distant past and today, brought together by some miracle.

Inspired by this experience, I composed "Mountain Girl." As I wrote, I wondered, "If we could talk through time, what would I say? If she replied, what would I hear?"

The deep, long-winded screams at the end of the song were my imagined answer. I wanted to test my vocal endurance, striving to mirror the physical improbability of something lasting as long as Juanita's body.

On the day of recording, I wasn’t sure if I could hit the screams because I hadn’t rehearsed them. I warmed up my voice without practicing the screams; I wanted them to be pure, unrehearsed, as untouched as the princess. Hitting them would mean success; missing them would make the day of tracking guitars a waste.

Halfway through the first take, I thought I might pass out or lose an eyeball. My body told me I had only one shot, so I pushed on. It felt like the thin air of the Andes, where Juanita’s body remained perfectly preserved. I knew if we were to meet, it would be near the edge of consciousness.

I made it through the first scream, which lasted exactly thirty seconds, and managed the second scream in two breaths. I attempted a second take, but my body couldn’t handle it.

The recording pushed me to my limits, reflecting the endurance of the mummy princess in my own way. Those screams may not be replicable live, but they captured the raw intensity of that moment. In those thirty seconds, I felt a connection to something ancient and lasting. It was my first time singing in a studio in ten years—a cathartic reminder that the music is still in me.

Mountain Girl

Words written for Syria and sung in the style of "Julia" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney of The Beatles  

Today I’m missing the beautiful year we spent in Damascus, Syria and all of the friends we made there. Christian Glakas of Merciful Heavens invited us to set some words reminiscent of that beautiful land to the tune of Julia by the Beatles.   

We recorded it one afternoon on a cassette tape recorder which gives it a fitting nostalgic and melancholic feel. You can hear the entire recording at my SoundCloud channel. Here are the lyrics with their translation:

Syria سوريا - Julia (Beatles) by Scott Zuniga feat. Christian Glakas and Emilie Zuniga

Zuniga (pronounced soon-yee-ga) invokes honest childhood in his compositions—filled with the joy of discovery but never forgetting the dark foreignness inherent in exploration. Born to a Scottish mother and Mexican father, Scott is no stranger to feeling strange. What sounds like a metaphor or a joke is an actual biographical detail from Zuniga’s life. But his music takes pleasure in blurring the line between metaphor and autobiography.

In his 20s, Zuniga immersed himself in the flamenco rhythms of Andalusia, Spain, and traveled through France, Egypt, Jordan, and Syria, collaborating with artists like Lynn Adib of Bedouin Burger. This shaped a style that blends introspective indie folk narratives with international influences, mirroring Zuniga’s multicultural heritage.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Zuniga recorded his debut album ‘Language of Ghosts’ in Austin, Texas, with the help of Maurice Chammah and Matt Puckett of Mother Falcon. 

Scott Zuniga returns with a batch of new acoustic music recorded in the Basque Country, the land of his ancestors. He continues to explore themes of self-discovery and multicultural identity, asking, “If I'm not from here, nor there, then where?”
