Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works 1.5 (Part Two)

Friend began his journey as a music journalist in 2010 founding @psymedia before taking up DJing 2017. In 2018 he moved from South Africa to Vietnam and quickly established himself as a formidable DJ and promoter in the region. From sandy beaches down south to mystical caves up north, Friend played at many reputable clubs, festivals and tropical jungle raves such as Studio Adventure, Savage, Retreat (Equation), We Groove and Equinox Festival. His creatively curated 'This Is' club nights and prolific sunrise afterparties in Hanoi under his humble record label @magicboxengine also played a pivotal role in shaping the city's underground music scene.

Since returning to Cape Town in 2021, Friend has performed at renowned festivals and prolific venues such as Wolfkop Weekender, Bazique, Habitat, Into The Wild, Afrikaburn, Origin Festival and Modular Club. Often eclectic, sometimes obscure, always tasteful, Friend's forever evolving sound is heavily influenced by his nomadic travels in SE Asia, South America and Europe. Never shy to switch up the genre or tempo, Friend's versatile approach pleases dance floors - blending elements of ambient, house, minimal, techno, electro and breakbeats depending on time, space and the present.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.

I found this interesting, because for a lot of my generation Aphex Twin is the true sound of Cornwall. And whilst I can appreciate the music and social effect of brass bands, choirs and traditional music, I’d be lying if I said I could relate to much of it. The music of Aphex Twin can be beautiful and sublime, but it can also be nightmarish and jarring. A bit like Cornwall.

It’s challenging at times and uncomfortable, whilst being progressive, original and resourceful. A bit like Cornwall.

It’s made a massive impact on the rest of the world, whilst being clearly influenced by the surroundings and landscape in which it was made. A bit like Cornwall.

I’m often reminded of the opening sequence to David Lynch’s film Blue Velvet (1986), where the camera drifts into the soft, sunlit safety of an American suburban neighbourhood. Deep red roses line the white picket fence, a fireman waves from his truck, children cross the road and a man is watering his lawn. But as the sickly sweet music plays on, the man in his garden suddenly collapses in pain. He writhes with agony on the sodden ground – is it a stroke or a heart attack? The hose pipe sprays wildly, as a dog barks, unaware of its suffering owner.

Then, slowly the music fades, as the camera burrows into the grass, deeper and deeper, until we see an enlarged wriggling mass of shiny, black beetles and worms. A sinister reminder of what lies beneath the pristine shine of a “happy place” – there’s a dark side that we don’t want to talk about as much.

That’s how I feel about Cornwall sometimes; behind the squeaky clean veneer of holiday cottages, sunlit beaches and quaint heritage – a strange, wild and sometimes ugly underbelly awaits. You’ll find it once the visitors have gone, late at night, if you look hard enough…
