brief biog kind of stuff.... I took the usual avenue into dj’ing for somebody from my generation: proper electro, chicago house then found detroit techno...and never looked back.
I started djing in early 90’s playing parties and just being a very eager young un, willing to play anywhere.. The first proper gig I got was playing at seminal newcastle techno night Bloated, then got involved in a night called curious yellow in newcastle in the late 90’s that brought surgeon, lost’s steve bicknell, james ruskin and space djz amongst others to the toon. not long after that I was one of the residents at reverb, a techno and drum n’bass weekly in newcastle playing alongside carl craig, baby ford, dj bone, mr c, vince watson and many other techno and house luminaries of that era. In that time I dj’d at a fair few parties and clubs around the northeast and further afield, put out a few 12”s then took a break from djing wanting to spend time with family. after a few years off the scene I finally ended up regularly spinning for the signals crew in newcastle, playing old school chicago, detroit techno and H.O.U.S.E.

We once stood solidly on land, but now sway silently on spindly stilts in the surf.

Rotterdam’s Mowgli blends the serrated edges of Chicago house, rough 90s techno, sleazy wave and unknown boogie and whatever leftfield curveballs that fit the mood.
His sets pull from the friction between nostalgia and chaos, where synths hum, drum machines spit and tape hiss brings the fuzz. Whether behind the decks at sweaty clubs like Doka, NAR, Radio Radio or Poing, festivals like Wildeburg and Blijdorp, or rooms in Tokyo, Antwerp, Berlin, Madrid and Prague, Mowgli thrives in spaces where weirdness is welcomed. 

His sound is punk in attitude but cinematic in feel. Think deep cuts, dubbed-out B-sides and hypnotic loops that tilt toward euphoric disorientation. One moment you're in a downtown dive bar, the next you're lost in a Balearic haze or being jerked sideways by a mutant boogie oddity, and never do you know what's coming next. 

Mowgli's long-running Anak Kota FM shows on Operator Radio are for unbound expression where musical boundaries dissolve: carefully dug out ambient excursions, leftfield house spirals and weirdo downtempo blends all feature in his unexpected but storytelling sections. 

This lean towards lo-fi comes from a life spent absorbing DIY cultures, old punk flyers, hissing VHS tapes and skate-video scuzz. Beyond the DJ booth, Mowgli is now channeling these inspirations into Exposed 2 Rhythm, a low-key project where he shares all those things and more, with parties, t-shirt designs and new music all a possibility. 

Still rough. Still raw. Still searching for that moment where familiar feelings flow in unfamiliar ways - Mowgli makes any smoke-filled space his own.
