First up, our own Danny Akalepse takes us for a listen to his Impressions of Impressions Part 1 mix, paying tribute to The Impressions with a mix of Soul & Rock covers of their tunes. To celebrate the launch of the podcast we pressed up a limited edition cassette tape of Impressions of Impressions Part 1 and the forthcoming Part 2 (all reggae covers of Impressions tunes). Expect to hear mixes from Big Crown artists as well as a ton of heavy weight DJs and record collectors that we are happy to call friends and colleagues. 

From Danny on Episode 1: 

“The Impressions, as Curtis, Fred, and Sam are one of my favorite groups ever. I’m really into collecting covers, I have been at it for a long time. I came up with the title for these two mixes and that really got me going, from the artwork to the tunes I really like the way this came out and it seemed fitting to commit it to a tape, two sides worked really well for the genres. This project definitely sent me on a trip digging and digging for more versions to add to what I already had, and I had to leave off some killers so I wouldn’t repeat songs. Some of the records on here aren’t straight covers but tunes that someone jacked Impressions melodies and arrangements and wrote their own verses over them.  At the end of the day this mix has a heady level to it, but I am hoping that even with no context at all, and for people who don’t know who The Impressions are it will still be a good listen just the same. Curtis is a god in reggae, there’s way too many covers to get onto one mix, so I pulled some of the more known ones and some of the more obscure. I collect a lot of reggae records, something most folks don’t know me for, this is the first time I am releasing a reggae mix publicly. I hope everyone enjoys the vibe”.

After years spent perfecting his craft as a guitarist for some of the most notable acts to come out of Staten Island’s rich and diverse local music scene (Paul & The Tall Trees, Eamon) as well as becoming a fixture at various acoustic showcases, singer/songwriter Sergio Napoletano has found his stride... and his bandmates. With an enormous support group of musicians/friends including AJ Pantaleo, drummer of The Jazztronauts (and who can also be heard on records with Baked and Bueno), the band succeeds in not just playing songs but creating the atmosphere in which they dwell. Adding to the sonic landscape on past recordings is Will Schalda on piano/keys (Billy Swivs) and Paul Schalda on guitar and backup vocals, bringing instant chemistry from previous projects together (Paul & The Tall Trees). 

As a live act, the band can go from light and airy to gritty and tight, sometimes trading in their sweet polished sound for a more clunky indie-rock vibe which often demonstrates the real strength of their music: concise, well-written songs and undeniable musical chemistry… in the tradition of the great American songwriters... with the universal appeal of straight rock and roll.

His new EP, 'Memory Aisle', is a collection of songs conceived and developed over the last few years while working from home and finding new ways to record and layer ideas. The songs reflect on the past and look forward to a future of new paths and formative experiences.
