Our phones, our cars, our televisions, our homes: they’re all getting smarter. Artificial intelligence is already inextricably woven into everyday life, and its impact will only grow in the coming years. But while this development inspires much discussion among members of the scientific community, public opinion on artificial intelligence has remained relatively unknown. 

Artificial Intelligence: American Attitudes and Trends, a report published earlier in January by the Center for the Governance of AI, explores this question. Its authors relied on an in-depth survey to analyze American attitudes towards artificial intelligence, from privacy concerns to beliefs about U.S. technological superiority. Some of their findings--most Americans, for example, don’t trust Facebook--were unsurprising. But much of their data reflects trends within the American public that have previously gone unnoticed.    

This month Ariel was joined by Baobao Zhang, lead author of the report, to talk about these findings. Zhang is a PhD candidate in Yale University's political science department and research affiliate with the Center for the Governance of AI at the University of Oxford. Her work focuses on American politics, international relations, and experimental methods. 

In this episode, Zhang spoke about her take on some of the report’s most interesting findings, the new questions it raised, and future research directions for her team. Topics discussed include: 
-Demographic differences in perceptions of AI
-Discrepancies between expert and public opinions
-Public trust (or lack thereof) in AI developers
-The effect of information on public perceptions of scientific issues

Puce Mary is Danish experimental and noise artist, best known for her piercing live performances and full-length releases on Copenhagen’s Posh Isolation and Berlin’s PAN Records. Debuting with several homemade cassettes of noise in the darkness to transmitting ideas and feelings through an increasingly complex musical vocabulary, Frederikke Hoffmeier represents a new era of industrial, noise and experimental music, taking a very thoughtful and emotional approach to the slow-evolving layers of distorted sound.

From a series of skins worn by the British-Egyptian audiovisual artist, creative-computing designer, writer, producer and composer Sarah Badr, FRKTL is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, subjecting her piano, violin and guitar to heavy levels of processing, utilizing live sampling and improvisation, vocal manipulation, field recordings and generative rhythms, composing and independently releasing immersive, hypnotic and haunting explorations of sound.

Bonnet, recording artist (as Kassel Jaeger) and theoretician, Director of Groupe de Recherches Musicales of the National Audiovisual Institute (INA-GRM) in Paris, and producer on National French Radio France Musique. We talk with him about the recent publication of the english translation of his book "After Death" (2020, Urbanomic)in the context of the current pandemic and the general externalisation and disembodiment of death. We do end up divagating about improvisation, the sublime, romanticism and other meta-musical tropes in the direction of François' most recent book "The Music To Come" (2020, Shelter Press).

Decoherence illustrates a theoretical framework that once applied to musical composition, may be a more accurate representation of the quantum world. If we abstract away from the specifics of quantum-mechanical models, we can discern a system where an electrical signal interacts with a circuital environment thus becoming amplified or attenuated. Ordinarily, we tend to think of this spectrum modification as destructive, dissipating information about the electrical signal.

The environment induced decoherence can actually enhance our ability to extract information about the system being observed. The quantum-mechanical interference causes a broadening of the spectrum induced by the finite resolution of the measurement process. Decoherence is not a new theory unto itself, but is instead an efficient repackaging of theory.
