Female Storytellers is a project that tells the stories of several Syrian women fighting for their right to equality and freedom. Some of the stories show the reality of this fight under the ‘patriarchal rule’ that still controls life in Syria, while others show how war has affected women, and increased their suffering. Each one of our protagonists has faced a different situation on. They come from different backgrounds; some of them lead a rural life, while others lead an urban one, some are religious, others are not. Although all the stories are true, and were written after interviews with the protagonists, in some places, we have had to withhold certain details to protect our witnesses.

Female storytellers

Would she find the telephone number? Ofcourse she would, it had been embroidered onto her clothes some months ago. She picked up the receiver and dialed the number. After waitng a few moments, she heard a weary voice.

A Little Bird Told Me

‘There is no point in saying to people in pain that you are also in pain. That
won’t make them feel any better. It’s better to say that you feel their pain, or that their pain must be great.’ With these words, Dania started to talk about the mechanisms of nonviolent communication.

Heart To Heart

I can’t deny I was amazed by her sudden decision to talk about it, 25 years after it had happened. Why were things any different today? Was she a different person today than she had been yesterday? What does she want out of this?

A soul people don’t know about

She was among them, her eyes moving with theirs, in search of the same sense of release as the others. After hours of waiting, she saw it from afar, lazily approaching like a sluggish old man. ‘This is it,’ she said to herself. She started to stand up, but an elderly woman caught hold of her.

The Truth Is What We Find when searching for something else

For 24-year-old Nouma, the revolution was an important turning point in her life. It allowed her to discover her strengths, thereby helping her to escape the confines of her traditional society. Its traditional ways of thinking offered only narrow choices to young women: either get married, or choose from a limited range of subjects to study, all of which were in line with the expectations of society for their gender.

The Freedom Generation

تعمل شبكة الصحفيات السوريات على بناء جسور بين الإعلام و الحراك النسوي السوري عن طريق تعزيز وتمكين قدرات العاملين والعاملات في المجال الإعلامي، وتمكين النساء الصحفيات للوصول إلى شغل الأدوار القيادية في مؤسساتهن، إلى جانب تفعيل دور الإعلام فيما يتعلق برفع الوعي المجتمعي  بقضايا النساء والمساواة بين الجنسين. تعمل الشبكة أيضًا على تحسين صورة النساء في وسائل الإعلام، وصولًا إلى مجتمع سوريٍّ عادلٍ لجميع مواطنيه من نساءٍ ورجال، وتحقيق تغيّرٍ اجتماعيٍّ إيجابيٍّ على صعيد التفكير والسلوك فيما يتعلق بالعدالة والمساواة بين الجنسين.

The SFJN is a nonprofit association, registered  in The Netherlands since 2013.
It seeks to build bridges between media and the Syrian women’s movement by enhancing and empowering both females and males working in the field of media, by empowering female journalists to take over leading positions in their institutions, and by activating the role of the media in raising social awareness concerning gender equality and women’s issues. The SFJN also works on improving the representation of women in the media to achieve a Syrian society that is fair to all of its male and female citizens, and to realize a positive social change in thinking and behavior with respect to matters surrounding gender justice and equality.
