Jason van Wyk is a Cape Town (South Africa) based electronic music producer whose music I often wish could have been my own. From cinematic soundscapes to soft piano keys and mesmerising passages, the elements of his pieces are all the necessary ingredients that I often try to combine in my music. And that is basically the highest sort of praise that I could give. There are many incredible ambient musicians who truly inspire me with their ability to create and transport me to their fantastic sonic worlds. And plenty have contributed to my growth as a musician - I am permanently indebted to many of them, whom I am honoured to call friends. But in my soul, I am a pianist, and the instrument [or its echoes] inevitably make it into my tracks. And this is what I love about Jason's music. His most recent release on the beloved n5MD, Inherent, is a more upbeat, forward-driven progression, combining his skills of crafting dance-oriented grooves with atmospheric soundtracks. For his upcoming EP, Jason reworked three tracks into pure ambient pieces. To truly appreciate the transformation, start by hearing the original track, followed by this alternative version. Mutable Ground is an album created through an exchange of recordings between Anna and Yannis. The project is rooted in the idea of sudden shifts in current events and the ever-growing emotions tied to loss, change, and tension. Each track title is inspired by unstable phenomena and objects, reflecting the potential for unexpected movement and the transitions of both nature and humanity. Repetitive, chaotic drum patterns, vocals that echo sounds of wounded or lost animals, hollow soundscapes reveal a sonic world where creation and destruction coexist—where people dance around fires, caught between fragility and resilience.

TB-303, feedbacks and modular synths: those are the words that speak volumes about Jaquarius.

Driven by a thirst of experimentation, Jaquarius keeps pushing the limits of his own sound universe in a pure, endless, creative liberty. Coming from a primitive, ecstatic energy drawn from the rave culture, his homeland, his music brings a contrast to the retro-futuristic aura of it, which is connected to sci-fi movies and his acousmatic history.

His live performances as his productions invite us to wander in an electronic universe where synths are space and drum machines are time, we’re exposed to a kaleidoscope of sounds in constant fizzing that awakens all our senses.

From his beginning as a DJ in free parties at the age of 15 to the live performances of today delivered with as much intensity as accuracy, Jaquarius didn’t just follow simple artistic urges. Indeed, after 4 years of electroacoustic studies at the Conservatory of Paris, and thanks to the progressive acquisition of various synths and machines, he remains in constant evolution by always trying to free himself from all kind of technical barrier and test new methods of creation, reflecting his music.

Shaping his acid music outside of beaten tracks in an almost organic symbiosis with his machines, Jaquarius keep dropping as intense as unpredictable releases on Acid Avengers, Lunar Distance, Hypnotik, Zodiak Commune, Kromatones, Ceaseless, Microclimat, Mindcolormusic, No Pizza Rave, Statik Travel or even Narcosis Label, labels whose strong identity match his distinctive authenticity.

The title of the album - ' The turn of the screw ' bears a resemblance to, of course, Henry James. And the fourth track ' Conchis ' is directly inspired by one of the main characters of the John Fowles' amazing novel ' The Magus '. Having in mind the title and the atmosphere of the first track - ' Practical Magical Evocation ', it can be said that the whole atmosphere of the album is intended to be or sound magical. Let's hope for more to come in the same vein.
