We are sharing today a new other people mix by journalist, community organizer and musician Spirodon from Free City Radio in Montreal. 

His words on the mix: This is a mix of local artists living and working in Tiohtià:ke / Montréal. It highlights artists that I have gotten the chance to work with directly around the intersections of art and social activism on a variety of fronts. All these artists have contributed in various ways to efforts to sustain and build a healthy, inclusive and transformative network for the arts in the city, while also working to explore the ways that artists can directly contribute to concrete struggles for change. Particularly I got the chance to work with these artists around the building of the Artists Against Apartheid concert series in solidarity with the BDS Movement to support Palestinian freedom. Others within this mix I have worked on artistic initiatives to support struggles for migrant justice and for the rights of undocumented people locally, particularly around the Immigrant Workers Centre. Also I selected artists who have been vocal against systemic racism and police killings for years, linked to community work over generations to build community power. Finally, I just want to say that all of these tracks are beautiful! Thanks for listening. On the B-side, 6 remixes deepen the sonic palette of the dreamy landscapes showcased on the other side. Alon.e dwelves into trancy synths and an IDM/trip-hopish groove for his version of Super Yellow Juice. Le Frit reconstructs Nunca Esperei por Ti. into a low-key, delicate and psychedelic dembow track. H2O gives a new life to Bamboo Flute with a playful version halfways between dub and synthwave. Guillerrrmo, straight from Manaus, member of São Paulo’s Mamba Negra, distorts the same track into a slow and powerful breakbeat heater. Manchester’s Obeka delivers a mesmerizing dancehall remix of Bury me, with Love, inspired by the track’s heady synths. Last but not least, Ditti re-harmonizes Escadarias into a colorful and quirky reinterpretation.

A short story inspired by the mix:

A séance conducted in foreign tongues is interrupted by whirlwinds that engulf and carry away the bodies of the participants. At the same time, several hundred metres below the surface in a stalactite cave: if you listen carefully, you can hear fragments of a heated discussion taking place while strange artefacts are being packed away. The melody of a sitar plays on the radio, but the radio waves are repeatedly disrupted by the presence of the artefacts. Annoying. We return to the planet's surface, where the swirling winds have dissipated and the participants in the séance have been released. They now make their way to a temple to devote themselves to the next ritual. Apparently, they cannot get enough. But what is that? Outside, a formation of shooting stars, attracted by the rhythmic ringing of bells during the ritual, begins to fly around the building, disturbing the concentration of the participants who are in the process of falling into a trance state. Upset, the people rush outside and want to catch the cheeky rascals. A wild chase ensues. One of the participants manages to grab hold of a glowing tail and is pulled upwards into the galaxy. As the two fly together through the dark expanses, they observe strange beings on a silver planet forming a mysterious sculpture out of light. When they land, they notice that this object appears to be being erected as part of a celebration. They see a parade approaching, consisting of constantly morphing, transparent creatures performing their ecstatic dances before their astonished eyes. In disbelief and amazement, the human rubs his eyes, but the journey has only just begun...

On July 19, 2015, at the invitation of UC Berkeley Center for Buddhist Studies in partnership with Khyentse Foundation and Siddhartha’s Intent Western Door, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche gave a talk entitled, “Is There Buddhism Without Rebirth?” on the UC Berkeley campus.

These days, many westerners view reincarnation as irrelevant to their engagement in Buddhism. Yet, for centuries, Buddhist texts have been filled with warnings about those who deny the existence of rebirth and the ethical ramifications of such views. How are we to understand such warnings? And if we discard what many consider to be “cultural trappings” to what is essential about Buddhism, what is left of a religion that teaches the lack of any independent existence?

In this talk, Rinpoche specifically addresses those Buddhists with materialistic, Abrahamic, or Brahmanic tendencies. Using the framework of relative truth and ultimate truth, Rinpoche expounds on how reincarnation fits the definition of valid relative truth, being usable on the relative level. Rinpoche also goes into detail about how, through Buddhist study, objects can be validated.  Also covered in this talk are: the main purpose of Buddhist teachings, concepts of direct teaching vs. expedient teaching, and union of relative truth and ultimate truth.

2015 年7月 19 日，宗薩蔣揚欽哲仁波切應邀至美國加州大學柏克萊分校，針對轉世這個西方人較為難以接受的佛教概念進行開示。仁波切的講話對象是針對那些帶有唯物主義、亞伯拉罕宗教或婆羅門教之殘餘影響的佛教徒，以世俗諦與勝義諦為框架，闡明了轉世符合正世俗的定義，在世俗諦上有其功用，然而在勝義層面上不能主張有轉世的存在。開示內容並且包含了佛教驗證事物的方式、教法的目的、了義與不了義的概念、世俗諦與勝義諦之雙運等等研習佛法的重要課題。
