In line with current trends it always pays to deliver a party promo mix packed full of upcoming shizzle, newbies and the like. 

North East Disk Jock Justin Mills has been a regular fixture at Signals and Road to Rimini parties from yesteryear in NCL, prior to that he played records at the old Reverb and Bloated parties; back in the days when folk weren't looking into their echo chamber/idiot sticks for validation. 

Justin does not play out enough but then again he's got nothing to prove. It's an honour to get him to hit the red button and he's delivered a fine mix that includes a few tasters of upcoming and future Signals (from the North) as well as great tracks from labels that are still sticking two fingers up to the global insect posse™.

Yo, step back two centuries — we talkin’ Industrial Revolution, fool. Steam engines, smoke stacks, and stacks of paper. No cameras, no Insta, no TikTok. Nah, this hustle wasn’t televised, but the grind was real.

Way back in the day, a tight-ass crew rose up from Benwell — real OGs of the West End. Their turf was Newcastle, their game was industry, and the coin? Flowin’ like the Tyne, baby. Big cribs, long streets — mansions for miles. It was paradise for this original world class wreckin cru, real G status.

And the shot-caller? William Armstrong, the muthaf***in’ Baron of Boom. This dude ain’t play — he made bank off iron, steel, and killin’ machines. Tanks, guns, the whole nine. But yo — he said it was all in the name of peace... yeah, a’ight. Still, homie stacked bills like Lego.

The West End dons didn’t just run biz — they ran dynasties. Kept it in the fam, yo, ‘cause blood is thicker than contracts. Land in Northumberland, castles on hills — they flipped their street cred into lordship. Royalty, G-style.

But like all empires, their game started to slide. Industry fell off, but the paper? Still stacked. The hood changed, Benwell got civilian’d out. The OGs bounced, took their loot elsewhere. From factories to finance — global domination on the down low.

These Gs saw the future, dawg. They switched it up — dropped the old names, played it humble. But behind the scenes? They moved weight. Banks, offshore accounts, multinational smoke screens. From local bosses to the Great & Good — the same Gs, just new suits. Slicker than ever.

Statues went up. Streets took their names. Suddenly they was heroes. Ain’t nobody asked who paid the price. The little people? Left in the dust yo. That’s the street, man — cold world, no mittens.




Later on, they dressed up like they cared — joined the dev agencies, urban projects, community talk. “For the people,” they said, while countin’ them dividends. New mask, same grind. Ain’t nothin’ changed but the branding.

Follow the funds — from Armstrong to Ridley, from Spence Watson to Lamb — the names might be old, but the hustle’s eternal.

Signals From The North - Echoes From The Burning Bush

TrapZ or TrapmasterZ or Trapmaster S or just plain Steve is well known within the North East Daarrrncce scene and also notorious for  rigging decks to play at +16.

How does this go? 'BACK IN THE DAY' from which we'd pile on the superlatives yadda yadda yadda.  Steve Nicolson is a good guy though and he Disk Jock'd quite a fair bit in the 90s/early 2000s in and around the North East. He co-ran a series of parties called Protect & Survive around the time the British Electro scene popped its head up in the 90s via Rephlex, Warp, Breakin and the like.  It was a good gig.

He ran PAs for a good few years too and helped us a lot with the Road to Rimini nights and the various Signals parties. 

He gave us this mix here and called it Stella Soundings after the Stella Power Station that used to be near his house in Tyneside. He wanted me to maybe write something about history and stuff, so I did, off the back of his mix. Read it here

A re-imagining of the soundtrack from the 1970s film Demon Seed. Demon Seed stars Julie Christie as a house wife who loses control of her coffee machine and the central heating as her house (and her body) is slowly taken over by a computer with the voice of Napoleon Solo from the Men from U.N.C.L.E. He wants to study humans, their glass jaw minds and isometric bodies........

Signals From The North - I'm Waiting

As Peter Ackroyd said ‘I don’t believe in ghosts but they frighten me’ and with same sentiment you could say I’ve never been to LA but I love it.  

It’s an imagined landscape seen darkly through a lense and experienced via the silent milieu of isolation in the films of Michael Mann, the neo noir of Chinatown and the abandoned decadence of movies like Sunset Boulevard. I know it through Ed Ruscha’s photography, David Hockney’s paintings and the sunkist pool side splash of Paul Schrader’s American Gigolo. It exists in my head and I’m fully aware it isn’t a real place. 

So when exiled Angeleno, disque jock and producer https://soundcloud.com/deirdre-direktor, now a resident of Rotterdam, sent me some of her tracks for the label I asked her to do a mix and channel LA through it. In her words ’a foggy, mysterious, romantic sorta place with darkness lurking in places’.

A seasonal session slipping seventy per cent seven inch slabs of seductive sounds and surface noise into a two thousand and seven hundred second mix, casually stretched and selected for yule solstice salutations. 

Recorded and originally broadcast via short wave transmission from a mobile transmitter van hooked up to the Pontop Pike transmitter on the edge of Gateshead Metropolitan Borough in the North of England.

30% infrasound and sonic artefacts discarded and accessioned into the West Gateshead Sonic Artefact Library in Bensham, Gateshead, UK.

Signals From The North - Wailing Ghosts II

This is a live recording of my friend Peter Mangalore playing records just over 10 years ago at a night we used to do called Road to Rimini in Newcastle upon Tyne. Peter was the main DJ and played the final hour after Wee DJs live slot. It was an off shoot night called Face Your Fate which took place in the Northumberland Arms a literal underground boozer - the DJ set up by day served as a hot plate that would keep mince & dumplings warm for high street shoppers and Newcastle's professional shoplifting community. It was the perfect set up for Peter. 

Peter died this weekend. He was 42.

Never got round to uploading this mix. This night was very special as it was the first time me and my mates had met Peter, we became firm friends after this and he would visit us up in the North East regularly. Pete had friends in the North East that loved him very much.

We had originally connected through mutual friends - Ali Renault and the Human Shield Record Company crew/Magic Waves crowd who we had met a year previously. 

It's an understatement to say Peter was unique. He was a true outsider, supreme raconteur and a lot of fun to be around. We became very close. 

When on form and positive, he was a supreme force for good and an amazing individual. His enthusiasm for people, his generosity, talking to animals ('Alreet myeet'), seeing the absolute wonder in the most mundane and oblique shit - a champion of the weirdo.

For the last few years Peter struggled with addictions and really poor health. At his peak though he was a mercurial force, egoless when it came to music and a generous creative talent. The loss of Peter will be felt by loads of folk especially in the North of England. He had a giant personality.

I always felt this mix summed him up perfectly, a true outsider with a immense talent and raw energy. A live mix can really put you back in a time and place, especially when you can hear the crowd through the needles, it's an emotional mix for me and a proper time capsule of emotion and feelings.

He had an incredible influence on me and introduced me and my peers and friends to so much good music - not just dance stuff. Peter saw the cracks in the reality tunnel and I owe him a great deal. Life was never dull around Peter.
