You're the Vibration

Another take on creating a track from a saxophone line. The original is heard up front. I have also added two drum loops. The bass, guitar, and piano are played by me. I think I have finally found a bass sound for recording. What you are hearing is my 5/8 sized Shen double bass with Corelli strings through a Rode NT1 Signature Series condenser mic placed about 2 feet away from the bridge. It then went into an SSL 2 audio interface with the 4K button engaged. I then added some eq to cut through the mix and a touch of room reverb. What do you think of the sound?

Counterbalance Evolution

Got up this morning and got this tune stuck in my head. I decided to practice some chord inversions, rootless chords, and chord substitution on the jazz guitar. I used some drum loops from loopcloud on this one, but the guitar and bass is me. Jazz guitar is recorded direct to my SSL2 along with a RODE NT1 signature series, with 4K on, about 16" away from the top. The bass was recorded with just the NT1 about 2 feet away from the bridge. I did use a little bit of compression on the bass here. Low compression ratio. I usually don't like compression on the double bass, but this seemed palatable and got my overall level of the bass track up without a lot of work.

I actually switched to standard guitar tuning for this track. For a while now, I have been sticking to fourths tuning on guitar. I realized, that with just a little bit of effort, I could play my shell voicings on the guitar. Most of the chords on this track are just three notes on the guitar. Primarily 1 3 7, or 1 7 3. Unless I am utilizing inversions or using the guitar register to add tension notes to the overall harmony.

Darn That Dream

A partial remake of my earlier rearrangement of Frédéric Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, Op. 10 No. 12. 

A Sunday excercise where I laid down a bass part with the Jazz Bass Ultra on top of my earlier rearrangement. I played the electric piano part originally 2.5 years ago as midi in several takes. Also some midi note corrections and quantizations were made back then especially since the changing of the rhythm turned out to be more difficult for the left hand than I expected.. I'm not a pro bassist but it sure was fun playing this! I also didn't want the bass to steal all the attention from the keyboard part:)

     Howdy everyone and I hope everyone had a great Labor Day, without laboring of course!😂 This is another of my instrumentals, which actually had lyrics but the vocals were not recorded too well so I made it into an instrumental. It's about having that Las Vegas experience which I'm sure nobody can afford anymore with this economy unless you're a billionaire! I've been to Vegas many times and most times I've lost, hence the title "Lost Wages"! I'm not a gambler, so when I lose a couple of hundred dollars I start sweating profusely!!😂 It's a fast paced song and I played like a boogie-woogie synthesizer on it and a rock guitar. Charlie played a groovy harmonica on it too! I've decided to drop an instrumental and a cover song every month from now on besides my normal songs and videos.      The video was a lot of fun to put together and it's all about Las Vegas, the gambling, the show girls, the drinking, the excesses, pretty decadent stuff! There's is a lot of eye-candy here for the grown-ups to enjoy! It drops tomorrow on YouTube! The original song with lyrics was called "My Neck Of The Woods" so if Charlie and I rerecord the vocals, I'll make a video of it as well. I hope everyone enjoys this song and video and remember, don't gamble unless you can afford to lose a ton of money and are rich because it is an addiction! Last time we went to Las Vegas, back before the pandemic, it was for about a week and all we saw were the shows and never gambled, that was my favorite trip because I didn't lose a dime! But guess what? We're going back to Las Vegas in December 2025 to watch the new "Wizard Of Oz" spectacular in The Sphere! Check out the clips on YouTube, it's really mind-blowing! No gambling!! This is a tune composed by Oscar Pettiford and Harry Babasin. It also goes by the name "Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas". It first appeared on Bud Powell's album "Blues in The Closet" in 1956.
