Libano - Nights (Younker Remix)

I am really happy & honoured to announce the officially licensed release of this rare disco / modern soul gem from 1980. Here is my small story about this : I have been introduced to this record a few years back by DJ Klas. On the very first listen, it made me crazy & I went on an intensive & long quest to get myself a copy of the 45. It then became a kind of classics of my DJ sets, the record always being in my bag. It is definitely a sure shot for the dancefloor ! 

I then got in touch with the artist Lamar Thomas, first to try to get a spare copy, but after a few conversations on the web, I told myself it would be nice to give this rare & excellent record a new release. Pascal Rioux & Favorite Recordings finally agreed on the idea, and here it is.

Pop without being Pop, electronic without being electro, hiphop-elementes without being hiphop, a band without being a band: Between the decelerating calm before the storm and energetic beateruptions I’M NOT A BAND create opalescent soundstorms of a widespread range of musical worlds and emotions. With a grand gesture their melodic arches are catchy but never predictabel.

In conformity with the self-imposed guideline PAST FORWARD highlightens the next consequent step in the duo’s evolution. Their start in to a new era is as thrilling as consistant. The second album of Stephan Jung and Simon Ortmeyer from Berlin marks a turning point and launches their biggest strike. The understanding of their music is as modern and innovative as international. PAST FORWARD tries to be pop – pop music in it’s very best sense. It’s demanding without overstraining the listener. It confuses but stimulates one’s fantasy, it’s slowing down into one moment to burst out euphorically into the next one, once being melancholic, once being impetuous.

The minds behind I’M NOT A BAND shut themselves away for almost two years to create the organic, vibrant and urban sound of PAST FORWARD – leaving their oasis of comfort behind and getting past old patterns to reach new impacts and effects.
The album is a collection of intensive thoughts and memories: Things come to an end for something new to start, sometimes we’re full of euphoria, sometimes it costs us quite an effort. And unexpectedly you’ll find yourself stuck between past and future. There’s no way forth nor back and there’s no exit out of this limbo that keeps you imprisoned.

The music is a reflection of this conflict and tries to break free in it’s own ways.
A variety of selfcreated samples open up a wide spectrum of soundscapes, break up old patterns leading into experimental synthie-aesthetics. It’s the everyday that is the foundation for I’M NOT A BAND to make use of. That’s how the band crafts a musical backdrop out of construction noise and thunders a pan against tiles, then alienating it beyond recognition and futurizing it. Carried by the warm voice of Simon Ortmeyer and the both delicate and orchestral accentuations of Stephan Jungs violin the songs are reaching dynamics, danceability and energy that is beyond ordinary club music. The atypical tempi and a recurring half time feelings round out a dynamic-tensioned mood and crackling atmosphere.

On stage – between popular clubs and big festival stages – I’M NOT A BAND prove what music can be in 2017: Pure energy, musical virtuosity, high class sound experience and changeability. I’M NOT A BAND create songs for those black and white nights in the world’s metropolises which remain unforgettable.

Lagaffe Tales is a record label based out of Reykjavík, Iceland run by two DJ’s and producers Viktor Birgisson and Jónbjörn Finnbogason. Founded back in 2012, the label has been busy with 4 vinyls and 19 digital releases to date featuring artists such as Coeo, Moony Me, Davíð & Hjalti, Felix Leifur, Moff & Tarkin, Malouane and many more.
ILO is one of the more unique producers coming from Iceland past 20 years. In 2011 he became a widely known name on dancefloors around the world with his edit of New Musik’s classic ‘Warp’ and more recently with the 2017 hit ‘Everybody’ on OOFT!’s label Foto Recordings. ILO has a great catalogue of releases on labels such as Rebirth, S-Hit Records and Thule’s legendary offshoot 66 Degrees Records dating back to 2001. He’s also been a much sought-after remixer through the years. ILO has made remixes for some of Iceland’s widely known artists, for example, Sigur Rós, Múm and GusGus. Having him finally in the Lagaffe family is a great honour.
The two tracks take the listener on a ride in terms of length, Take You To Love by ILO is a two track piece divided into the A side : Take You To Love and the B side : Miracles. Take You To Love is a slow breaky ode to the Naked Music’s 90s classic ‘I’ll Take You To Love’. It’s unconventional bpm, diva vocals and breakbeats make an interesting combination that hits you right in the feels. On the flip side is the house anthem ‘Miracles’ which offers more soothing vibes, but still hits you heavy with a thumping bassline and soulful vocals. “I still believe in miracles” it keeps repeating in your head for a hypnotizing 15-minute journey. ILO’s style of arranging the tracks without rushing hypnotizes the listener, and before you know it you’ve gone on a 15-minute ride through ILO’s vast soundscape.

The door slammed leaving a resounding echo within the empty halls of the house. Upstairs she lay on the bed pondering what on earth had gone wrong and why it was that she was never good enough. Outside the cold wind howled, it was as if winter were out to get her let alone her own personal life. Rain lashed against the window with a dull thud, what would have been a usually comforting sound became a repetitive reminder of the empty world outside and that of which she had lost.

LA-based Chicagoan Dino Soccio is no stranger to the disco/edit game, with grips of nifty free flips available on his soundcloud, and prior releases under Only Children. Dino's been running a sweet little weekly party by the name of Pleasure of Love in a Hollywood basement venue for a few years now, and now the vibe is being translated into a wax label. Pleasure of Love aims to reflect the underground house and disco leanings of the feel-good party, sometimes even venturing into exotic and global territories. We know what you're thinking--"oh great, another disco edits label"--but if the first release is any sign, Dino is managing to stay on the tasteful, useful and just plain fun end of the spectrum.

Our premiere from the record drops the BPMs a bit for a silky summer mood. It's 80's postdisco vibes from the get-go, with groovy percussion and chopped vocals providing the intro. The irresistibly summery bassline and keys will steal your heart, as the dubbed-out vocals and extended arrangement accentuate the experience. It's a properly and respectfully tweaked version of the Lonnie Reaves jam, seeking purely to help DJs provide maximum dancefloor pleasure.

Iceland's Intr0beatz has had quite the year, rising through the ranks to become a name many people are talking about, and the same can also be said for ya boii Cody. As you'd come to expect with both these names, quality and bounce is supplied by the truck here. Cody manages to distill even more funk and swing out of the original, utilising key aspects but adding in his own synth workouts we've come to know and love from him. Seeing out the year in style!
