Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize (Benedikt Frey's Downtown Ghetto Edit)

This is an uplifting - but downtempo - deep house tune, that updates the original with added layers of melody, and a whole different vibe.

This mix celebrates Palestinian resilience, but also reminds us that Palestine is still the issue. And it needs to be healed. It needs to be put back together, but behind all of that enforced endurance, is a resilience that is unmatched. The Palestinian people deserve to be free. And they will be. Soon hopefully.

This track is dedicated to the journalists of Gaza, without whom we would not understand the full extent of the massacre. 

It's quite fitting that one of the most supportive journalists towards the Palestinian cause for freedom, John Pilger, is featured on the vocal version. He sadly passed away in December 2023, just months after Israel began it's massacre. RIP John Pilger.

Following a debut EP on Golf Channel in 2015, Autarkic aka Nadav Spiegel has risen in status alongside his close friends and collaborators Red Axes and Moscoman. His recent debut LP for Disco Halal has garnered critical acclaim. Spiegel clearly has a rare talent as a songwriter, crafting the kind of intelligent, left-field pop music that one usually has to look back to the avant-garde of the 1980s to find.  If things were more downtempo, experimental and psych rock on his first EPs, these tracks for Turbo point squarely at the dance-floor, and have been staples in the sets of not only Moscoman and Red Axes, but in the other rising stars of the underground Israeli scene around labels like Malka Tuti and Fortuna records, as well as the global groove empire developing around Turbo A&R Thomas Von Party’s Multi Culti. @Yuksek ’s now six year old label @PartyfineMusic kicks off 2019 with a bumper compilation featuring plenty of exclusive tracks from  key associates old and new.

The compilation showcases what the label will release in 2019, with forthcoming EPs by new signees @HelloAzur , PoloCorp (half of French duo Polo & Pan), Birdee & French Toast, Uncle O, and exclusive tracks by Obas Menor (half of Rabo & Snob), YouMan, Love Will Say No, Moonlight Matters and more as well as edits and remixes by Purple Disco Machine and Yuksek himself.

Dark disco, deviant disco, neo disco, psycho disco... you can pick up just about any word to describe the sound of this new compilation, but for sure disco is the main influence. Disco is not only for poolsides or cheesy parties, as this label has long been proving.

The air was hot and thick making it hard to breathe in the small waiting room. She glanced up at the clock and then back down at her watch. She'd been waiting for a long time, what felt like hours and hours. But it had only been a few minutes. Maybe the heat was getting to her. That must be it. Each person that exited the room looked as if they were in a state of trance, as if they had been hypnotised. Something strange was taking place in that room and she wasn't sure she wanted to know exactly what. As she stood up and made to leave, her name resounded around the room on the tannoy. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to have a look...

Calypso Records founders Thomass Jackson & Iñigo Vontier set up their label as a way of shining a light on Latin American artists, however for their next release they hone in on Tel Aviv and four artists making waves in the Israeli city. Entitled Tel Aviv Flavors, the EP features tracks from Middle Sky Boom, Niv Ast, Naduve and our pick from Rina; rattling drums and erratic percussion over a deep rumbling bassline.

The next 12 incher on Wrong Era is made by Marching Machines, a duo made of two Belgian powerhouses: Dimitri Andreas and Spacid. Their love for electronic machine manipulation and their musical history that spans over 2 decades, built an excellent foundation for this brand new project. “Lonesome” is a slow burning dark electro track with howling and gloomy synths that flow into acidic tendencies. “Desolat” continues on the emotional path of the previous track, embracing solitude on a broken rhythm, ending up in arpeggiating classic and cosmic italo track. In succession of that, there’s “Driven” which moves up to dancefloor dynamics by using harder and raw sounds, combined with an analogue pulsewave sound generator and building into a release of energy with wavy synths and smashing snares. The final track is a remix of “Lonesome” by one of Wrong Era’s label bosses Fabrizio Mamarella. While the original idea is still intact, the remix is a definite bigger and faster version, implying a stark contrast that still remains powerful, perfectly made for the dancefloor.
