Today’s #MusicalMinute was inspired by a trip to the ballet!  Yesterday, I went to London to see Black Sabbath-The Ballet.  Wow, what an excellent performance and production by the Birmingham Royal Ballet.  Regular listeners will know that I like to try out different styles; well here is a hybrid track containing polyrhythms, Pareto’s chance, pitch-class sets, orchestra, drum kit, bass guitar and synth.  What do you think?

In a time where dancing with others is forbidden, and most clubs in Europe remain closed, we felt it was time to shift gears. The fourth edition of our compilation series SOMEWHERE is best enjoyed lying down.15 tracks that will chill you out, put you at ease and comfort you in this difficult year.

It will not surprise you there is a strong Dutch presence on SOMEWHERE IV. Machine master Mattheis (best known for his stunning work on Nous’ Klaer) showers us with beautiful arpeggio’s that seem to stem straight from his modular. Fader from Borneo (but actually from Rotterdam) takes a much different approach, with long floating chords that move up and down like the surge near the shore after a violent storm. And then there is the sample wizardry by the experienced producer Love Over Entropy, who tackles analogue sounds and lets them run rounds in ever smaller concentric circles. It’s as hypnotic as it is intriguing.

There is something for everyone on SOMEWHERE IV. As long as you’re cool with absent kickdrums or aggressive hi hats. In fact, there is room for a kick. On the wonderful wonky 'Endure', by Utrecht based knob tweaker Vela Uniform. It’s one of the highlights of the album and it reminds us of the heydays of Warp’s Artificial Intelligence Series. Yes, it’s that good.

Another gem is 'Sometimes' by Machines of Loving Grace, an alter ego of the veteran dj & producer Eric de Man. He takes us to a nearly deserted rain forest, where birds and insects seem to go around in slow motion. De Man made this melancholic highlight more than 13 years ago. It clearly stood the test of time.

Ambient music has been around long before Brian Eno gave the genre it’s name. But over the last few years and thanks to a string of strong releases by artists like Huerco S, Kara Lis Coverdale and Kaitlyin Aurelia Smith, the genre is on the rise again. SOMEWHERE IV is the perfect antidote for stressful times and the sorrow of a closed down nightlife.

Arch was born in 2020 when a strange and invisible beast issued from the depths and caught us all off-guard. The antidote for three electronic-music-lifers in Berlin was to create a series of carefully curated live concerts, an exercise in the new and bizarre language of socially distanced happenings. 

Great joy was to be found amidst those challenging months. Boundaries were crossed, expectations exceeded, and a wave of new music came into existence as the artists on stage adapted and opened up to nutritiously rich, meditative zones. Hybrid strains of experimental, avant-garde, IDM, electro-acoustic and post-club ambience were witnessed and enjoyed responsibly. 

Three sold out concerts later, we find 2020 drawing to a close with ‘Life on Small Planets,’ a 10 track curated album featuring many of the artists who performed at arch. 

Featuring Amandra, Fred Mann, Inland & John Gürtler, Jamaica Suk, Johanna Knutsson, Kev Sheridan, Magna Pia, Mathias Schober, Merrin Karras and Perm & HAL, ‘Life on Small Planets’ is a refreshing reminder of the power and importance of contemporary (electronic) music.

"Two years after their first record came out, the crew operating legendary dance nights in Nantes are back on top of the new release pile. Two original tracks by Kanot and two remixes. Overall, their stylistic balance signature is maintained, although the gravity center is a bit more leftfield and poetic, a bit less dance-obvious. But that's only in comparison to other material : any of the four pieces here can take a dance floor apart, played at the right time.

Hit & Run has a massive "star grabbing" feel, the synth and guitar surges sounding like as many jumps above the stratosphere, and the vocalizing choirs on top making it a definitive cosmi jam.
Turbulens is more earthy than spacy : drum breaks and big ass basslines bring out an irresistible leg shaking feel, the melodic guitars on top balance the vibe into that delicious moment when caribbean sunsets turn the day into a warm a groovy night, certainly a party starter.

The pilotwings remix is to the image of their added touch : trancy on edges but very far from easy or obvious. Constantly jumping above and diving under the line, it's playing greatly with dancers feet, and eventually their minds.

House man Vidock delivers the most danceable material on this record. His strong experience as a DJ for parties focused on having people dancing freely for a long time is clearly audible. This slo mo belter doesn't need much advertisement, it just needs to be played to any dancefloor, be it at midnight or 8 am."

Originally from the Isle of Skye, an island on the West Coast of Scotland, now residing in Inverness – the Capital of the Highlands, Duncan MacPherson AKA Terra runs the @counterterraism Mix Series on Soundcloud, along side fellow music cognoscente’s @karlmarkham and @robdun2804.

Started in 2020, the series has already welcomed industry heavy hitters such as @tronikyouth @therobotscientists @ticitaci @machinegewehr @hola_estrella ...and obviously @lebollet 😉 to mention just a small sample.

The Counterterraism Mix series was founded to help share and promote artists within the Slow Techno, Indie Dance and Dark Disco genres. Now with a growing listenership it has cast the net wider, encompassing a plethora of styles including EBM, Italo Disco, Nu Disco and guitar heavy rifting tracks with Acid House overtones.

Within the series Duncan, Karl and Robbie alternate in offering up a monthly Counterterraism Residents mix which aims to take you on an hour-long journey through the wide range of styles they enjoy.
