Beam Up AKA DJ Delay AKA Brian May is a prolific producer and multi-instrumentalist, originally from the UK, now residing in Germany via Australia and Japan.  Recent 7”s co-released with One-Drop Berlin and several remixes (notably a Sizzla dub rocked repeatedly by Rodigan) set the stage for his wicked debut on ZamZam, showcasing two of the many sides of Beam Up.

Zweimal Steppers is a heavy and heady journey into propulsive 4/4 dubwise with syncopated percussion, swirling keys (courtesy of Frenchman Dubble Dubble), and sonic trompe l’oeil lurking around every corner.  The bright, shimmering surface rides a massive bass undertow like sparkling waves over a bottomless ocean trench. May goes hard on the tape delay and reels out the reverbs in truly masterful style and fashion.  

Higher Level is a next-genre unto itself, a wicked missive from an under-repped area of dub & reggae history.  Part futurism, part homage, the bass and kick usher in a sic-fi take on The Clash (with shades of The Police, and a double-time riddim reminiscent of The English Beat’s finer moments).  The guitar, played by Australian collaborator Joelistics, is a 1966 Fender Telecaster - Joe Strummer’s favorite - hence the brilliant revive feel.  Electric bass and trumpet by May round out a high-stepping future 2Tone rocker guaranteed to wheel at your next Punky Reggae Party.

'The spirit of dub continues to drive all the music I make,’ says Brian May a.k.a. Beam Up. ‘This album takes those dubwise qualities of rhythm, space and bass, to shape a series of tracks that could be tagged as a variety of genres.’ 
Dedicated to the great Osborne ‘King Tubby’ Ruddock, ‘…for repeatedly showing there are no rules’, Innerstand builds on that great legacy in its presentation of a truly contemporary, outernational dub experience.
Abetting Brian May are a diverse trio of vocalists, each of whom brings unique qualities to the project: Terrence Alfonso Bowry, a UK-born Canadian national whose experience has mostly been gained on Shanghai’s jazz and blues scene (where he worked alongside artists of the calibre of Wynton Marsalis) brings an ear for sophisticated harmony and improvisation; Jornick Joelick, a French-Guyanan rastaman with a big voice bringing an earthy, rootsical quality; and Katya Tasheva, a polyglot singer with what May calls ‘sublime frequencies’ whose background spans traditional (including world-music mavericks and former Beam Up compadres Rotfront) , pop and drum- and- bass. 
The album is a musical journey that of course references King Tubby’s Kingston, Ja. and Rhythm and Sound’s Berlin, but also the Balkans, Japan and Australasia (and more); as well as Pablo, Glen Brown  and The Skatalites, influences such as Prince suffuse the set, which sometimes takes on the feel of a version excursion, as May’s riddims nod to the classics of the past, subliminal echoes of the great dub tradition, though it’s more usually in the form of ‘inspiration’ than carefully worked out covers.  The Wire mag has already called this ‘timeless top-grade dub’ on the basis of a sneak preview, and we think that just about sums it up…

KAMIKAZE SPACE PROGRAMME is a true sonic rene­gade, a gen­uine music experimenter.
Some­where between a clas­sic Musique Concrète and mod­ern elec­tronic approach, KSP’s music is made up of myr­iad sam­ples and found sounds from real world sit­u­a­tions, it lends the stuff a very real tex­ture and aes­thetic that links it to the here and now, the every­day, in a very real way. The sound of an old truck, the hiss of a ket­tle or the clunk­ing of a door are all fair game for KSP, who then takes his strange sound sources and weaves them into infec­tious sonic tapes­tries and intri­cate rhythms.!
