Very clear recording - love the sound of the water.

One day in Winchester Cathedral. Recorded for my series for Radio Solent, the soundscape begins with Matins at around 07:30 and concludes with the quarter hour rung from the clock mechanism in the bell tower. I didn't know that the organist and choir would be practicing and that a small orchestra would arrive to rehearse for their performance of Haydn's Creation that evening.

It is still dark when a single Black Grouse starts calling on a forest clearing. Morning chorus from nearby forest is getting louder as birds are joining in one by one. A Woodcock can be heard when flying over the clearing and making strange croaking sound. Other birds in the recording: European Robin, Song Thrush, Cuckoo, Song Thrush, Eurasian Nightjar. 1. May 2012, around 4:15 AM, near Koiva (Gauja) river.

"The Douro - A giver of life"

This is the Moth. A fairly good sized moth was flapping around in my garage window the other day so I recorded it with a Sennheiser MKH-8060. I used the proximity effect of the 8060 to get a nice deep wing flap sound. There also was a smaller moth type insect that stopped by and I got it also. It looked like a fat green moth variant. This sound is FREE to download for a limited time at 24Bit 48K. The complete files will be available soon in a new HD sound effects collection.

Welcome to the first is a series of sound collections from The Recordist archive called SoundVault. This collection contains sounds from inside four airplanes during flight. Most were recorded in the mid 1990s when flights were many and people were few (those were the days!). Three of the interiors were recorded with the Sonic Studios DSM head worn microphones to a PDR-1000 DAT machine at 16-Bit 48kHz. The fourth was recorded in 2009 on a PCM D-50. All the sounds were edited and mastered at 24-Bit 48kHz.

The aircraft recorded are: Boeing 737, Boeing 757,  Mcdonnell Douglas DC-10 and a  Mcdonnell Douglas MD-80. I was lucky enough to be on flights with very few travelers so the voice activity is minimal. There are sections that contain voices from the pilots, flight attendants and passengers.

The interior sound of the older MD-80 and 737 are unique in that the engine turbine noise can be easily heard. Modern jets have much quieter engines and the air circulation systems are much louder. These ambient jet interiors can be used by themselves as they are but as most sound designers know, the best backgrounds are usually built with many layers. By adding just a little muted jet engine noise to these tracks they can be customized to easily fit the environment you require. I hope the building blocks available in this collection provide a good start to any interior jet scene.

This is a composite sequence of the wind that swept though North Idaho on November 8, 2012. Recorded in my yard at various locations near leafy objects with me standing next to the Sennheiser MKH-8040ST microphone freezing my butt off. During the day it was partly cloudy an when the night fell it became cold and was snowing. From the forthcoming Autumn Wind SFX Library. Enjoy! -Frank

Cold November Windstorm

For those who haven't heard about it yet, I've spent some time in October 2012 recording empty shores and beaches in and around Sergiyev Posad. Those sparse and sometimes murky sounds recorded there are to be transformed a new series currently in progress. This time – the sounds of the Lesnoye lake in Sergiyev Posad. It's a man-made reservoir, popular amoung the swimmers in summer. Now, we only hear the waves splashing (A), the fishing reel chattering (B), the leaves flapping in the wind (B), the wind itself (A+B), and to the great surprise, the amateur saxophone players rehearsing in the woods nearby (B).

Для тех, кто, возможно, ещё не слышал, напомню, что осенью 2012 года я провел некоторое время на побережьях и пляжах в Сергиевом Посаде и его окрестностях. Записанные там звуки – редкие, иногда довольно сумрачные – постепенно формируют новый цикл, работа над которым идёт в эти дни. Вот записи с берегов Лесного озера, рукотворного водоёма в Сергиевом Посаде. Оно популярно летом, а теперь там можно услышать только плеск волн (A), треск сматываемых удочек (B), трепет листьев на ветру (B), сам ветер(A+B), и к большому удивлению – саксофонистов-любителей, репетирующих в лесу (B).
