Dying Dwemer Centurion - Live Performance in Athens Conservatoire (9/12/21)

Inspired by the video game series “The Elder Scrolls”. The Dwemer Centurion, aka Dwarven Centurion, is a huge mechanical warden, watching over the ruins of the deserted Dwemer cities. In this piece, I attempt to channel its malfunction and final collapse, in other words, the death of a machine. There are two sonic layers: the prepared environment of the machine city, improvised “cries” of the Centurion. 

Live Clarinet with delay pedal, DIY 555 Astable Oscillator, Korg Volka Keys, recorded found sound, live electronic processing.

αbout the piece:
The “Beneath/Underbreathe” was created during the winter of 2021-2022. The recent discovery in the Oracle of Delphi regarding the subsoil of the temple was the main source of inspiration. According to the research, ethylene gases entered through the cracks of the temple. The smell of the ethylene could cause ecstasy, change in the way of speaking, hallucinations, etc. For a long time, the process by which the Pythians came into ecstasy and offered oracles remained a mystery, until today when science came to solve the myth. Inspired by this story, the work explores the dynamic relation of the percussions with the bass clarinet. Starting from the "subsoil" the music rises and seeks the "ecstasy" that arises through the continuous transformation.
