Bio:

Immersed in the synth-pop and electronica of the Eighties growing up in southern England, State Azure (b. 1972) found early inspiration in Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, and Vangelis. Deconstructing their tracks ignited his passion, leading him to develop a foundational understanding of electronic music theory, composition and production entirely by ear and experimentation.

He honed his skills as a keyboardist and producer within live bands before venturing into solo ambient/experimental territory. This self-taught journey fostered a deeply improvisational and emotional approach, free from the confines of formal training.

State Azure's sonic world is further shaped by influences beyond music, drawing heavily from science fiction, cosmology, physics, and technology.

Seizing the opportunity presented by the burgeoning online music scene, he launched the State Azure project to connect directly with listeners, debuting with the album 'Outlines' in December 2011.

Underdogs is the voice we all need in this seemingly endless combat between mental health, harassment, manipulation, and abuse. The corruption that lurks inside each and every one of us and the darkness that follows close behind is simply what the Underdogs feast from; but with a fascinating twist.

Q: "If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?"
A: "Invisibility. Not because I think it's cool. Believe me, I frickin’ hate feeling invisible; I'm sure we all do. I chose it because I'd know how to use it. Feeling invisible makes me the perfect person to grant that superpower too, because I'd know how to navigate it and use it to my advantage."

Underdogs teaches our society that there is strength in difference, and that by uniting together, we can shed and evolve the ego self. It is simply a subtle, yet impactful lesson to our society, that ignoring our flaws only allows our deepest fears to morph into a nightmare reality for everyone.

A concept of corrupting the surface layers to reveal and expose hidden universal truths, Underdogs is a new kind of colored darkness, separate from the evil that lurks in the carnal self. There is no light without darkness, and likewise, no darkness without light.

While the young artist's Soul Portal alias casts a shadow from the brilliant light, within that shadow Underdogs reminds us that we can move through our dark shadows, shaping it into a tool that wields an unstoppable force for good.

Underdogs offers a challenge, and if accepted, the underdogs of our our society today will find themselves mutating in ways they've never allowed before...

What is a Shadow Portal?

A place of wonder. Crying and dancing at the same time. Intimacy, connection, raw emotion, and visualization. A means of bringing people together to heal.

Breathe in, breathe out. This is a portal into my soul.
What does yours look like? Euphoria? Sadness? Fear, worry, concern? Solicitude, laughter? This is your shadow portal.

Shadow Portal invites people to step through a gateway into their own, unique soul, and facing their shadow self. The shadow self is part of us that we push aside, and it holds all our regrets, griefs, and the darkest corners of ourselves. By viewing your shadow with unconditional love, you open the portal to consciousness and healing. This helps us find a unique purpose, fulfillment, and connection to a higher power.
We often struggle to communicate our thoughts and feelings- There's a reason; feelings aren't words. Sound can communicate things on very profound levels. Show them through art. Show them through audio. Invite them into your shadow portal, and step into theirs. Deity has many different names: God, Buddha, Allah, Ra. Sometimes, it is called science, and sometimes it called your higher self. And even sometimes... a pointless nothing. Whatever it is, it's all valid, and Shadow Portal gives an offering to heal people through sound...with a unique, electronic twist.

About The Producer:
Inspired by artists (both big and small) such as Au5, CloudNone, Loosid, Akosmo, Virtual Riot, Midnight Kitsune, i_o, Porter Robinson/Virtual Self, Asteroid Afterparty, STRNGER,  deadmau5, & others, the young producer’s signature style incorporates emotional chord progressions, futuristic sounds, vowel-like basses, punchy/resonant snares, and experimental, cinematic sound design.

Born from the soul in a transformation phase of life, Shadow Portal sets his eyes towards labels such as “Lost In Dreams”, "Monstercat", "Mau5trap", and "Rushdown". He has been making music since he was 4 years old with his family's piano.

Shadow Portal first discovered electronic music at a young age through Pandora radio. After hearing the iconic "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" by Skrillex, he fell in love with the futuristic sound. A few years later, he heard “Flight” by Tristam & Braken, released on the Monstercat label, for the first time while coming home from a mountain biking ride, and later found that many young producers were doing the same thing the professionals were. This was the spark waiting to ignite his passion for electronic music, and he challenged the question, "If they can do it, why can't I?"

Ever since then, he's been experimenting with countless genres, embracing chances to try new sound design techniques, shaping his signature sound. In the past years, he's participated in an official Monstercat remix competition, performed a live instrument show at his high school prom, assisted at a small 4th of July event, and bought a Roland System-500 modular synthesizer. About 3 years ago, he started learning to DJ on the Roland DJ-202. He is now adept at the skill, and aims to bring the Shadow Portal sound to venues where he can paint emotion with sound waves.

Shadow Portal's tracks sound identical to artists such as Porter Robinson (whom friends have said he looks strikingly similar to) the experimental Loosid, the legendary producer i_o who's influence has reached the far corners of the universe, the sound wizard Au5, and more familiar names such as Owl City, & Coldplay.

If you're looking for something to speak to the heart, step into the universe of Shadow Portal. The young artist uses Logic Pro as his DAW.
