"Well, pour some beer out on the curb for Haywood, because they've recorded their masterpiece and called it a day. Their final album, We Are Amateurs, You and I, isn't perfect, but it shimmers with occasional greatness like a magnolia just about to bloom. It's indie rock, all right; it sounds like Superchunk when it's loud and a little like the Sea and Cake when it's quiet, but it has its own voice, too, and in this way Haywood carries on the commendable indie-rock tradition of preferring modification to innovation. The new thing Haywood brings to the table is a keen, almost sadistic ear for wistfulness. Here, in "Hotel Bar in Moscow," the band finds fat, sorrowful minor chords to strike just when they're on the verge of becoming completely abandoned to the song's bouncing, dimly-lit-club-in-Waukegan rhythm. It's startling; it has to it the feel of a band that was onto something.

It's the next number, though, that makes Haywood's demise seem like a real occasion for grief. A lounge-ready breeze of a song with some quietly harsh lyrics ("I want to be just like my dad/and marry the first real thing I ever had"), "Come On Tell the Truth Now" is a must-hear, the sort of skillful, pretty, intelligent song that makes a person want to boycott all major-label releases forever. It's got everything that's missing from the radio: passion, and subtle power, and the love that drives bands to practice illegally in storage lockers and garages weekend after weekend in pursuit of the song that will leave their distinct mark on the unremembering face of the universe. All of Haywood's last moments are worth hearing; some of them, like "Come On Tell the Truth Now," the mournful "Six Stars" and "Button Up Buttercup," are vital. All this and the best album title of the year, too. Make it a double: We've lost another one."

Truth be told, it's a bit unfair to try to distil such a crazily diverse musical time into a tasty 30-minute nibble, but consider it as just a starter in a magnificent meal of middle-eastern psychedelic folk and garage (excuse the embarrassing-dad metaphors, I've never been great at mixing Sunday-morning hangovers and creative writing). Anyway here we go!
 
1.Erkin Koray- Hayat bir Tesseli - Erkin Koray 2 (Dogan)
Celebrated as the “Jimi Hendrix of Turkey”, Erkin’s reputation as one of the first to embrace electric guitar and modern amplification/ effects has earned him the status of Turkish pysch God. And he’s got some pretty fucking cool facial hair.

2. Mehrpouya – Soul Raga – Pomegranates (Finders Keepers)
Found on yet another ace compilation from the guys at Finders Keepers, this funky psychedelic jam is a gem. Iran is a country famous for its rich and diverse culture marked by revolution, exile and diaspora. The 60s and 70s were for Iran, as for many other countries, a period of political and cultural upheaval and change, reflected in the music of that time.  It is impossible not to the note the bombs, isolation, lies and hardship suffered by the Iranian people over the last few decades and hope that they will be remembered and reached out to, rather than ignored as the product of successive years of brutal rule.

3. Ersen – Gunese Don Cicegim – Ersen (Finders Keepers)
Funky beat-driven fuzz freak-out from one of the most versatile and schizophrenic musicians to come out of Andalou Pop.

4.  Shabah – I Need Somebody to Love – Raks Raks Raks (Raks Records)
Ideal for that late-morning pyjama mope. A great example of Western composition under the spell of Iranian time signatures and subtle emotion.

5. Penahi – Dance Music -  Raks Raks Raks (Raks Records)
Another great track from the compilation “27 Golden Garage Pysch Nuggets from the Iranian 60s Scene” out on Raks Records.  Perfect for a kitchen boogie.

6. Zia – Kofriam - Pomegranates (Finders Keepers)
I can’t resist anything with a good ole bit of rhythmic group clapping or some dance/trance inducing beats, so this had to go on.

7. Kouroush Yaghamaei – Gole Yakh – Where are you from? (Now Again Records)
Practically a child prodigy on the Santour (a traditional Iranian string-percussive instrument), Koroush Yaghamaei began to play the guitar when he was 15 and was one of the first musicians to introduce rock to Iran. Gole Yakh was his first single and breakthrough hit, a love song written by his friend, and famous poet, Mahdi Akhavan Langeroudi. However it wasn’t all smooth running, Yaghamaei’s voice was banned for 17 years after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, and his picture was only allowed to published in his albums 24 years after.


Half An Hour of.. Middle-Eastern Psych-Rock Freakiness

On the streets of early 20th Century America, nothing moved faster than 10 miles per hour. Responsible parents would tell their children, “Go outside, and play in the streets. All day.”

And then the automobile happened. And then automobiles began killing thousands of children, every year.

Many viewed the car as a death machine. One newspaper cartoon even compared the car to Moloch, the god to whom the Ammonites supposedly sacrificed their children.

At first, pedestrian deaths were considered public tragedies. Parades were held in dozens of cities to commemorate the dead children. Cities built monuments. Mothers of children killed in the streets are given a special White Star to honor their loss.

The main cause for these deaths was that the rules of the street were vastly different than they are today. A street functioned like a city park, or a pedestrian mall, where you could move in any direction without really thinking about it. The only moving hazards were animals and other people.  

But automotive interests wanted to claim the streets for cars. 
So they put forth a radical idea--cars weren't to blame, it was human recklessness. They found that they could exonerate the machine by placing the blame on individuals. 

They also coined a new term: "Jaywalking."
