Mosaic Mix Series - London

Trippy, subtle sounds from an underground favourite.

Nicolas Lutz is a Berlin-based DJ with ties to Club der Visionaere and London's Toi Toi Musik. He's revered for his record digging, and is part of an inter-connected group of European DJs who boast exceptional, varied collections that encompass mostly-forgotten house, techno and electro. Together with fellow Club der Visionaere regular Binh (who we profiled last week), Lutz is a leader among this crew, many of whom first emerged during the golden years of minimal house. Most of them have since moved on to more classic club sounds, though the emphasis on trippy, stripped-back and subtle productions remains. These artists, including Francesco Del Garda, Andrew James Gustav, Etienne and DJs connected to Berlin's rising Slow Life label, keep a low profile, without much recognition from outside their inner circle. They choose a style of DJing, which was mastered long ago by Perlon head Zip, where deep digging, long sets and playing vinyl are all key. 

The records on this week's RA podcast are far from new, but their textures are intricate, intelligent and often beautiful, plucked from the depths of '90s tech house, electro and techno. 


What have you been up to recently? 

I've been DJing, enjoying time with my family and searching for nice music. It's basically what I do the most. 

How and where was the mix recorded? 

It was recorded with two turntables and a mixer on a random afternoon with few friends at home. 

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix? 

The idea was to create a nice trip for the listeners. 

Where do you find most of the records you buy—online or in stores? 

I buy records everywhere. Any shop in the city where I live, or when I travel. I always try to visit the record shops of the cities I'm going to. And, of course, I also buy stuff on the internet. 

Any tips you can share on Discogs digging? 

Yes, of course. I can say that it is also very good to visit the shops and not only focus on Discogs—it's way more inspiring, at least for me. I find it so boring when people only talk about Discogs. 

What are you up to next? 

Just going on doing what I like: playing records, putting out some more releases on my label, enjoying the nice parties, enjoying the time with family and friends. This is what makes me happy.

Frankfurt born DJ/producer Benjamin Stager steps up to the decks for the ninth instalment in the Mosaic Mix Series. 

As the founder of Sensual Records and the Funky People parties in Frankfurt,  Benjamin champions the modern minimal sound and this mix, recorded after a night at Robert Johnson earlier this year , sums up the vibe of both the label and parties perfectly. For the tenth installment of the Mosaic Mix Series we turn to Berlin based DJ and producer Oscar Schubaq for some deep and dubbed out minimal vibes.

As well as DJing at some of the best clubs in Europe , Oscar co-runs Tardis Records (alongside Eli Verveine ) and released a superb debut ep on the label in 2014 thats well worth checking out if its not already in your bag - ‘Triade” Tardis 03. 

With a style that lies somewhere between house and trippy minimal techno he’s most definitely a producer and DJ to keep an eye on .... enjoy the mix.

132. Uma Espécie de Azul Radio Show 11.12.20 (English)

Molly’s RDV returns this December, rounding out the year with a reissue of material from 1994 by French artist Continental and backed by a remix from Cosmin TRG.
Amrboise Boret is a French engineer, mixer and producer located in Paris who released material under various guises from the nineties through to the early 2000’s. Here we see
his Continental moniker brough back into the limelight, highlighting a selection of material from the Pushin' It Up EP on Alliance Records.
Up first is ‘Flying Dub’, as the name would suggest a dub-infused excursion through gliding chord sequences, snaking bass licks and bright string sequences while swinging analogue drums dynamically evolve throughout. ‘Way U Jack’ follows, introducing a more Chicago leaning attitude rhythmically alongside low-pitched vocal murmurs, fluttering dub chords and a bumpy bass line.
Title-track ‘Whispers’ follows on the b-side next, employing ethereal atmospherics, flute like synth melodies, organ bass tones and crunchy, shuffled percussion. Rounding out the EP Cosmin TRG reworks ‘Whispers’, offering a contemporary twist on the original with intricately programmed drums, subtly nuanced introductions of the originals atmospherics, winding low- end pulsations and an overall ornate, dynamic feel.
