From their self-produced debut EP Noctua (out September 11), Sparrow is the second single to drop from emerging indie pop duo, We Are The Brave.

Comprised of singer-songwriter Jess Chalker (her vocals can be heard on recordings by Passenger) and underground hip-hop producer, Ox Why, We Are The Brave has started to gain momentum since bursting onto the scene earlier this year. Garnering community airplay across the country with first single, All Good Things Must Come to an End, positive reviews from international and local blogs have consistently praised the pair’s sound, with major Australian blog the AU Review calling the track "a cracker of a first release."

Inferences to Bat for Lashes or Tears for Fears seem obvious. But akin to All Good Things, Sparrow features the pair’s distinctive, swirly, ‘80s-feel production, with layers of analog synths adding to the drama of Chalker’s moody vocals, and accompanying Thelma and Louise-type imagery.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, my passion for music ignited early on.  It wasn't all smooth sailing, though. My grade school band teacher actually told me I had no musical talent! (Maybe the clarinet just wasn't my thing...)  But I proved her wrong.  At 17, I rediscovered my love for music thanks to a neighbor's guitar and those magical three chords – E, D, and A. "Gloria" by the Shadows of the Knight became my anthem, and I haven't looked back since.

Those early days were a wild ride!  We're talking guitars with strings like barbed wire and necks thicker than a 2 by 4. But hey, we made it work. I kept at it, and Mom, bless her heart, saw my dedication and surprised me with a Hagstrom 6-string electric and a Fender Single Showman amp – what a game-changer!

From jamming with my brother on those early axes to exploring a vast musical landscape – 60s rock, 70s jams, country, blues, R&B, funk, punk... you name it, I've probably played it!  I even paid my dues playing in bar bands – and yes, I got fired a couple of times! But those experiences taught me valuable lessons about taking charge of my musical path and finding the right collaborators.  I even played in bands that opened for national acts and worked with artists who went on to achieve national recognition!

This diverse experience fuels my songwriting, where I pour my heart and soul into crafting unique and expressive demos. Now, at 74, my focus is on creating songs that resonate with others.  I often explore different versions of the same song through my poetry, adding another layer of depth to my lyrics.
