Old dogs (auf Deutsch weiter unten :))stand around in the way, forget where the food bowl is, smell funny - and when they fade out of this world, they take part of our hearts with them. 
In the summer of 2016 my sister and my aunt had to say goodbye to their elderly canine companions. I wrote this song to honor these two old puppy dogs and my own precious Red, whose departure 3 decades ago still makes me ask: Why can't dogs live forever?

Ecstasy

(Deutsch weiter unten!) A playful romp? A disgruntled lover preparing to pounce? Mostly "Cat's Eyes" is a playful romp inspired by a cat's extremely green eyes glowing in the car's headlights on my way home from a late night band practice. The melody popped into my head then, and the rest of it came along the next day on a canoeing day-trip. 

The inspiration for the bridge stems from childhood memories of the Kentucky Bluegrass Festival on the Belvedere in Louisville. Our parents took us there in the summers with a picnic blanket to sit on - but my little sister and I didn't sit! We raced from stage to stage, marveling at the quick fingers of fiddlers, guitarists and banjo players; mesmerized by the tight vocal harmonies. Some of the best, earthiest, most exciting music there is.

Ein fröhliches Herumtollen? Eine verstimmte Geliebte, zum Sprung bereit? Hauptsächlich eine scherzhafte Tollerei, inspiriert durch die außerordentlich grün-glühenden Augen einer Katze, die meinem Auto spätnachts nach einer Bandprobe entgegen leuchteten. Die Hauptmelodie sprang sofort in meinen Kopf; der Rest kam am nächsten Tag beim Paddeln dazu. 

Der Bridge vom Song erinnert an das Kentucky Bluegrass Festival, die wir jeden Sommer in Louisville besuchten. Meine Eltern hatten eine Decke dabei, doch meine Schwester und ich konnten nicht still sitzen. Wir flitzten von Bühne zu Bühne und bestaunten den schnellen Fingern der Geigen-, Gitarren- und Banjospieler; verzaubert von den komplexen, mehr-stimmigen Harmonien. Aufregende, urwüchsige Musik!

Version von 5/2020 <  A "retreat" from my life, on Belle Île, a truly lovely island on the Atlantic coast of northern France, got me thinking carefully about something a perfect stranger had said to me months earlier: If you are alive right now, you have the strength to be happy and thankful. If this were true, I thought, then a bit of practice could make all the difference. This song developed during hours of walking the clifftop paths above the ocean. I sang it to myself like a mantra. It made all the difference.

The Strength To Be

A love story: we met in a European city park; seven years later we met again for a February camping trip in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. Yes, -40° F in a tent! We survived to get married. And tell the tale. This is the song I wrote for our wedding.

Eine Liebesgeschichte: Im Freiburger Stadtpark lernten wir uns kennen... Sieben Jahre später trafen wir uns wieder, um im Februar zehn Tage lang Nord-Minnesota auf Skiern zu bereisen. Ja, bei -40°C im Zelt! Wir überlebten, um zu heiraten. Dieses Lied schrieb ich für unsere Hochzeit.

To Soothe A Dragon

Putting things into lyrics and melodies helps me understand them better. I discovered this in 1996, when everything I owned - including a piano - fit in the back of my pickup truck. Then I married a German and moved to Germany; the songs dealt with homesickness, marriage and the weirdness of becoming a parent. In 2018 I found a band to go with my songs: "Stone" for the tough parts of life, "Flow" for the ways we find to sweep past them, "and" because together it's all more interesting. Now I get to write and arrange for multiple instruments, record, mix and master. Our first concert in the Salzkirche in Tangermünde was sold out. Our second one was, too. Though I live in Germany, I prefer to sing in English, so in our concerts here I tell the stories behind the songs in German. For some reason, people laugh a lot.
Our music is flavored with jazz, blues, Latin and bluegrass. Handmade music with soul.
