Comment Check with 2Deep

On this episode of Comment Check, presented by Toyota Corolla, Los Angeles DJ and producer 2DEEP invites us to discover guaracha, the thumping Colombian rhythm taking over Latin electronic music. Connecting with fan questions via his SoundCloud page, the co-founder of blockbuster party REGGAETONLANDIA shares insight into his pre-performance rituals and his working relationship with electronic music icon Steve Aoki.

2DEEP embodies the melting pot of identities and rhythms that boom at electronic parties around the world. Born Luis Cardenas in The Bronx, New York, his family’s Colombian and Ecuadorian roots dovetailed into his love of producers like Pharrell, Tainy and DJ Blass, fostering a voracious sonic appetite with a keen sense for dance floor rapture. As a gift on his 16th birthday, his sister enrolled him in DJ school, sowing the seeds of his eventual leap into music production.

In Los Angeles, 2DEEP has proven adept at creating exciting Latin dance spaces, launching his first party, MUEVELO, as early as 2011, followed by the incandescent GASOLINA in 2017. His latest venture is REGGAETONLANDIA, founded in 2021, where he mixes perreo, guaracha and everything in between at sold out events around the city. This spring, he brings hip-winding bedlam to Chicago, setting up shop at the massive Sueños Festival for an unforgettable night of hits and special guests.

Responding to a fan comment about wanting to hear his music at the club, he says,

“Definitely! You can hear it at REGGAETONLANDIA or any of my future DJ sets. Pull up and have a good time.”

In 2019, 2DEEP signed to Steve Aoki’s Latin sub-label Dim Mak En Fuego, joining the likes of ANDREKZA and La Favi on a growing roster of artists reimagining the boundless possibilities of Latin electronic music. Despite his mastery of electronic dance music and reggaeton, guaracha has grown into one of his sonic signatures. The bombastic rhythm is now synonymous with Colombian club culture and superstar producers such as Fumaratto and Daivy, with long roots extending back to the tribal guarachero scene in Mexico, and further back to Venezuelan raptor house.

In recent years, 2DEEP has found inspiration in another rising sound: música mexicana. The tidal wave of corridos, sierreño and banda sinaloense pouring out of Northern Mexico, Texas and California has defined a post-pandemic zeitgeist of roots-oriented Latin artists dominating the mainstream. One of 2DEEP’s most important credits is on “Nataaoki,” the smash crossover between corridos tumbados pioneer Natanael Cano and Steve Aoki. Today, his SoundCloud page is stacked with remixes and edits of chart toppers such as Fuerza Regida, Tito Double P and Luis R. Conriquez, giving them all the explosive guaracha treatment.

“[I like to] put together something fun and energetic that I can listen to in my Toyota before I go to the parties, or while I put a DJ set together,”

he muses, pondering the genesis of these riveting mashups. It’s clear 2DEEP is on the vanguard of a new club era, and you can get the scoop on this installment of Comment Check, presented by Toyota Corolla.
