Entre los organismos presentes en la naturaleza que emiten luz propia existe un fenómeno conocido como "mareas rojas luminiscentes" o "bioluminiscencia del plancton”. En algunas costas del Caribe se encuentran microorganismos unicelulares que emiten una luz azul-verde cuando son perturbados mecánicamente, como cuando el agua se agita o cuando los tocas. Ocurre en muy específicas circunstancias, cuando la noche es realmente oscura y las condiciones de visibilidad son buenas. Estas luces aparecen en forma de pequeños puntos de luz en movimiento alrededor de las manos y pies de los bañistas, o en la cresta de las olas formando haces de mayor tamaño.

 

Esta imagen inspiró el título de la pieza, enmarcada dentro de un ciclo de obras de la autora caracterizado por el trabajo alrededor de la luz y el movimiento. En este caso se emulan en cierta manera esos destellos que aparecen dentro de una masa oscura de sonido, así como la noción de observar un mismo material bajo luces muy distintas.

This Psalm is a cry, a call out for help, for being heard by God.
It is often described as a canticle of gradual ascent (Shir Hama’a lot). This ascent could be understood as a rise from the abyss to redemption.
I believe this Psalm could resonate with many, even non-believers, as it shows a universal and tragic part of human life and human nature. That is the experience of grief, depression, abuse, solitude or simply being in a place so dark that leads to despair.
But it also sends a message of light, optimism, and hope, through the conviction that one will be heard.
Even inf it comes from the Hebrew tradition it shows universal values that can be embraced by many cultures and promote tolerance and acceptance. In fact, this psalm forms a regular part of Jewish, Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican and other Protestant liturgies.
In this sense, during the piece the text follows a chronological use and adaptation throughout the Judaism and the different versions of Christianism: Latin: 530, Rule of Saint Benedict; German: Martin Luther Hymns, 1524, al and eventually the English: King James Version from 1610

Si la obra quiere ser espejo del texto, entonces la presencia del texto en la música no puede sino tener la estructura de una ausencia.

Espejos aborda el vínculo entre texto y música incluyendo dentro de su construcción estructural el concepto central de dos poesías concretas de Octavio Armand, concepto que está íntimamente ligado al funcionamiento del lenguaje; este concepto es el de presencia-ausencia. Para dar cuenta de este concepto la obra utiliza una metodología que se basa fundamentalmente en la ausencia de la materialidad del texto, lo cual da lugar a la presencia de un nuevo material (sonido) que funciona como suplemento; de esta manera la obra devuelve una re-presentación sonora de la estructura formal de las poesías, pero despojada de su materialidad textual original.

Dr Marcos Stuardo is a Chilean/British composer based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He obtained his 'Licenciatura en Composición' (Bachelor in Composition) with the Highest Distinction at Universidad de Chile under the tutelage of Professor Andrés Maupoint. He received his PhD in music at King's College London under the supervision of Prof Silvina Milstein.
