Electronic producer Max Cooper and ambient master Tim Hecker rework Ben Lukas Boysen on his new EP 'Golden Times 1' – out on Erased Tapes, June 30th 2017.

Championed by many including BBC Radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs as the standout track from his most recent album 'Spells', Boysen’s 'Golden Times 1' forms the very heart of his new EP with the same name. Boysen entrusted none other than Max Cooper and Tim Hecker to meticulously shape and lure the title track plus second single 'Nocturne 4' into two entirely separate territories, yet never drifting too far away from their original soundscapes. With 'Evensong' the composer himself contributes a previously unreleased piece. It is yet another example that Boysen is still opening new and unexplored doors in a bid to challenge the existing realm of contemporary music he is very much a part of.

“Spells was somewhat of a conceptual release for me, so the choice of the remixing artists and where the original material could be taken was very important. Max and Tim, both being role models for me ever since I began listening to their work and who delivered this incredible abstraction, I felt were spot on for this release and were dream candidates to work with. Their ability to re-direct and even re-invent the original material, partially subtle, and with an almost brutish sense of imagination, honors the originals deeply.” — Ben Lukas Boysen

“Ben has been one of my most listened to artists of the past year or so. His last two albums in particular, have meant a lot to me, and provided me with focus when I needed it. So I was excited to have a chance to remix his work. I felt like I couldn't improve on his idea, but what I could do was take what was the core for me, and expand it. It was just a matter of running with the feeling I got from his original, sticking with his melodic forms and original instrumentation, and letting the growing intensity continue along it's established path to the only possible end point of total annihilation in chaos and distortion. My version is almost a continuation of his original if it was allowed to blossom into percussive format, rather than a traditional remix.” — Max Cooper

The golden EP cover art was created by Torsten Posselt at FELD as an extension from the initial album artwork he also created for 'Spells'.

Coming in mid September is an absolutely lovely, pastorally infused, first album from Enofa (Ross Baker), entitled, “Arboretum”. Ross had released a collaborative album with us a few years back under the name, Middlemarch. His partner on that “Wolf Hall” release, Dimitris Avramidis, also contributes to this new effort as well.

For Ross, nature, and the inspiration derived from walking among the trees in the park and nature preserve near his home, plays a large part in the overall tone of this one long beautiful track. Like the Arboreta, which are regularly crafted to contain a range of contrasting shapes and colours, which gives them a very unique look and atmosphere,  this wondrous soundscape of sorts, incorporating field recordings, moody guitars and synth, and electronic treatments perfectly reflects the calming and mysterious feel of the long and languid  glorious English days of the moment. Wind chimes…the crackle of leaves underfoot….the light, swirling wind in the treetops…the sun breaking through the clouds…put this album on and you will find yourself strolling there as well!

TRS078 will come in two very limited, physical versions. The first, deluxe handmade version comes in an edition of just 50 copies. Each of these comes in the form of a collaged, stamped and hand worked vintage art deco, tri-fold photo folder, w/original photograph. Within each are collaged, vintage arboreal prints, dried leaves, and other arboreal ephemera. Each folder is extensively hand artified, and comes strung with a stamped tag made from an antique British cigarette card. Each comes with an attached, stamped black envelope containing a factory pressed CD, held on with an obi strip.

There is also a hand made standard version of Arboretum in an edition of 50 copies. These come in hand worked and altered, black digipaks, also with factory pressed discs.

It seems French musician and photographer Frédéric D. Oberland might be able to play more instruments than I can name. Mentioned in the creation of his latest album, Labyrinth, are electric guitar, Dark Energy Doepfer, harmonic pipe, critter, Guitari Organelle, hurdy gurdy, pantophone, alto saxophone, duduk and flute, just to state a few. 

With the release due for the 26th October, we were kindly offered an exclusive stream of 'La Part Du Feu', an achingly sparse piece of meandering electronics.

darren harper's latest work is a joyous collage for all seasons; a delicate record that soothes and refreshes the spirit.

kaleidoscopic chimes and playful bells tumble against each other. twinkling notes drift down in little flurries, then melt away as sunlit chords push aside the clouds.

low, thrumming bokeh echoes bring distant mountaintops intimately close, then curve down into hushed forest floors, winds whispering through leaves overhead. tiny layers of loops and quiet delays, jumbled melodies, sparse crackling branches, and somber swells invite contemplation of these fragile spaces.

each moment is cherished, each song reveals new life: ephemeral, yet enduring. the ice breaks, slowly gliding away as the river shakes off its long slumber.

never obscuring, always revealing; these intertwining paths abound with the hopeful promise that spring is coming.

Darren Harper - Wooded

A longingly beautiful mini-album Out of Time by London-based composer Mike Lazarev...Constructed as a soundtrack to an imaginary film, it is his first for the label and a standout work in his own high grade canon.

Opening with swells of strings and plaintive piano chords, lead single “Out of Time” sets a profoundly expressive tone. Each reverberating note is carefully, gently placed on a canvas awash with purity and stillness, finally building into a rushing river of breathtaking prettiness that culminates in a hanging, dead-stop ending. Later on the record, “Time Becomes” progresses like a Harold Budd piece or a Ryuichi Sakamoto soundtrack work, melting away the ice with dulcet chord changes as single string notes float on a rarefied air. “Outerlude” changes the mood again, its subtly Eastern European melodies and natural piano noises - the chatter of keys and shuffle of pedals - transport us to a haunted, deserted ballroom where a lone ghost pianist laments the weight of a tremendous grief.

“The protagonists of this imaginary film are constantly fighting against the fleeting moments on this plane. But it is less about death than it is about living. And most of all, it is all about time,” Lazarev writes. He is right: Out of Time is elegiac - heartbreakingly sad, even - but behind the melancholy themes lies a powerful affirmation of life, warmth, and the human spirit.
