‘Caterpillar’ is the first stage in a 3-part series. The band has been focusing on Biology and evolution as themes for inspiration during their writing process. “The metamorphosis becomes more evident as the other two stages are revealed. It's been a really fun process to work on. Especially because we are bridging the other stages (yet to be released) together.” Says Kevin Donohue. Chris Anderson’s (drummer) younger brother Spencer Anderson is also featured on the violin in the track. ‘Caterpillar’ is the 2nd single released by the band since their last EP with more music to be released in the coming months.

Caterpillar

The album is a mastered recording of the band’s performance at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO on April 21st, 2018. The ‘Live at Red Rocks’ set contains three unreleased tracks, treating listeners to their live versions before the studio recordings are officially released. The album starts with the trio taking the stage with fan favorites “Deluxe” and “Pablito” before diving into a 3-part metamorphosis “Caterpillar” > “Chrysalis” (unreleased) > “Night Moth” (unreleased). Additional surprises in the set include a SunSquabi extended band featuring additional instrumentation from Nicholas Gerlach (Saxophone), Will Trask (percussion), Eric Luba (keys), Leah Druzinsky (vocals) and Darryl Abrahamson (Trumpet) on the tracks “Cinnamon”, “Just A Little”, and “Pygmy Up”.

SunSquabi will be releasing “Chrysalis” and “Night Moth” this summer leading up to a full EP in Fall 2018. Keep an eye out for the new music and catch them at festivals all over the country this Summer.

“Chrysalis” is the second stage of SunSquabi’s three-part series that started with the track “Caterpillar” and will also include the forthcoming “Night Moth.” All three songs find SunSquabi focusing on biology and evolution as themes for inspiration during their writing process and show off a metamorphosis to the way their music has come into fruition recently. “The metamorphosis becomes more evident as these stages are revealed,” multi-instrumentalist Kevin Donohue explains.

‘Night Moth’ is the final stage and lead track of a 3-part series that started with tracks ‘Caterpillar’ and ‘Chrysalis’. “Night Moth is the peak of the metamorphosis and really represents the transformation we have gone through as a band over the last year. The song began as an improvisational idea in Madison, WI while on tour. Over time the song took form to what the studio version is today, changing shape and structure many times. This idea was really what spawned the rest of the upcoming album.” Says Kevin Donohue.

Night Moth

The Whack Lack series is about artists creating their own battlewax record; with tunes designed to work in their own right, as well as giving scratch DJs and vocalists some new material to work with. The battlewax concept is to keep it simple yet effective, focusing on the right hook with the right beat and nothing more. By encouraging a variety of artists to work on the series, they can each find their own sound within it, and have a different outlet for their creativity that doesn’t revolve around dance floors and mix down tech. For this third edition, we’re excited to feature Fanu, long time stalwart of the breaks and bass scene. Having released extensively as both Fanu and FatGyver, his music is driving, infectious, and always a must-have for any serious breaks enthusiast. He’s pulled out all the stops for Whack Lack Vol. 3, providing a listening experience that is both raw and finessed, and utterly unlike anything else you’ll hear on this side of Gastropodia Prime.
